Job Summary

As stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff and students. Facilities Management reflects high service delivery standards and requirements. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of campus buildings. Grounds maintenance services seek to preserve and enhance the appearance of the campus and the playability of sport fields through the provision of general grounds, horticulture, and landscape and sport field maintenance.

Reporting to either the Grounds Supervisor, Horticulture or Grounds Supervisor, Landscape and Sport Fields, or delegate, the General Worker 2 performs routine, skilled and semi-skilled horticulture or landscape and sport field tasks, as well as non-skilled general grounds maintenance work. The position operates vehicles of up to 3 ton capacity and their integrated functions, operates equipment, and uses tools, to perform the work in a safe and diligent manner by complying with Work Safe BC regulations and following established standard operating procedures and industry best practices. The position also exercises some independent judgement in completing the work, but consults the Supervisor or a Lead Hand on questions relating to maintenance standards and best practices. May provide guidance to employees in lower classifications on how to perform the work when directed by the Supervisor or Lead Hand. May perform the work of lower classifications when directed by the Supervisor or their designate.

  • With assistance, ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, Work Safe BC regulation
  • Ability to operate and do basic maintenance on the vehicles, equipment and tools required for the work
  • Demonstrated ability to apply industry best practices and standards, methods, cultural and cultivation techniques and procedures in horticulture OR landscape and sport field maintenance work

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Technician diploma (1 year) in horticulture science or a combination of horticulture science courses, training and experience, OR Technician diploma (1 year) in turfgrass science, or horticulture science
  • or a combination of turfgrass and horticulture science courses, training and experience
  • BC Pesticide Applicator's certificate
  • BC Class 5 driver's license

Experience:

  • Two years of experience in landscape or horticulture and general grounds maintenance work
  • Two years of experience operating associated vehicles and equipment and using the tools required to do the work

Additional Requirements:

  • Good physical health, sufficient strength, stamina and coordination to perform a variety of tasks continuously under all weather conditions
  • Willingness to work any recognized shift including weekends
  • Interest and ability to obtain the ITA Landscape Gardener Red Seal Certification
