As a subject matter expert, the Research Informatics Specialist applies operational insight and critical thinking to meet evolving data needs across research leadership and stakeholders. In collaboration with administrative, research, and ITS teams, the Specialist captures requirements and develops data integration, warehousing, and analytics solutions using platforms like REDCap, while ensuring compliance with Health Canada and FDA standards. Key responsibilities include generating complex reports, ensuring data quality and confidentiality, maintaining detailed documentation, and promoting standardized data practices. The role supports decision-making, strategic planning, and continuous improvement through problem-solving, process optimization, and education to enhance data literacy. Additionally, the Specialist mentors team members, supporting accurate analysis and fostering excellence in research data management.

Regular Full Time - 37.5 hours per week

Rate of Pay: $38.15 - $47.69

Confirmation of hybrid work options available to you will be clarified upon hire and may be subject to change based on the duties required of your position. Successful candidates will be required to perform work within Ontario and must be available to work on location, as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Upgrades research applications, provides advanced technical support, develops testing scripts, and validates platform to ensure Health Canada and FDA compliance
  • Ensures system maintenance, availability, and reliability for end users
  • Conducts business process and workflow reviews, inclusive of gap analysis to support the development of optimized solution options Develops and deploys appropriate engineering solutions; develops projects and processes for data access, sharing, visualization, preservation and re-use
  • Designs and develops system prototypes that enhance efficiency and streamline workflows
  • Logs, tracks, and facilitates the resolution of system issues and communicates with users to ensure understanding and acceptance of solution
  • Ensures understanding of project management principles and software development lifecycle
  • Plans, develops, and implements data strategies that align with business and functional requirements including data model designs, database standards, implementation, and management of data warehouse
  • Programs data extraction, transformation and visualization from different databases or Application Programming Interfaces (API's)
  • Supports research administration departments with their business analytics requirements by defining and managing data flow and dissemination between departments
  • Designs and develops reports that present complex data in meaningful formats that enable informed decision-making and operational efficiency
  • Ensures on-time delivery of monthly metrics to clients
  • Identifies opportunities for expansion and/or modification of existing research data management strategy and its supporting technology to meet new and evolving research data requirements
  • Plans and develops technical documents, business and functional requirements, user manuals, standard operating procedures, and training material for research informatics team as well as the research community
  • Serves as a subject matter expert, consulting with stakeholders to identify data needs, sources, and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Builds strong relationships, lead discussions, and guide clients through solution adoption and workflow changes
  • Collaborates with researchers and ITS to assess and optimize technologies and workflows impacting research operations

Qualifications

  • University Degree Software Engineering, Information Management, Computer Systems Technology, Statistics required
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred
  • Minimum 5 years recent related work experience
  • Proficient in identifying business requirements, developing functional requirements, implementing system solutions, developing data integration and data analytics platforms.
  • Extensive experience with data integration, analytics and visualization tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, SQL).
  • Experience in health and research data management, standards, and best practices.
  • Experience in software development and quality assurance.
  • Expert in working with relational databases (e.g. SQL, MySQL, MariaDB) for process improvement and reporting.
  • Programing and scripting experience (e.g. PHP, R, Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS) to support automation and technical implementations.
  • Experience in data management software tools (e.g. REDCap,)
  • Experience managing system compliance in regulated environments, ensuring audit readiness.
  • Experience in generating technical documents and reports.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Excel (Pivot, filtering, sums, formulas across multiple worksheets), Planner, PowerPoint, Project (WBS, Gantt charts), SharePoint.
  • Experience in creating visual diagrams such as Data Flow Diagram (DFD), Data architecture diagrams (ERD), Flowcharts, Use Case diagrams using Visio.
  • Experience with products such as GIT, Visual Studio, Linux.
  • Detailed content knowledge and proficiency with associated provincial and/or national healthcare standards and best practices, metadata databases, and reporting systems preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of clinical research in an academic or hospital environment including protocol requirements, Quality Assurance, and data management best practices preferred.
