Overall Purpose

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), the Assistant Officer, Occupational Health and Safety will support the effective implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the Board’s Occupational Health and Safety Program to ensure a healthy and safe working and learning environment across the TDSB.

Summary of Duties

  • Assist the Senior Manager and Regional Officers in coordinating and delivering the Board’s Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • Provide guidance and technical advice to school administrators, departments, and Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs).
  • Interpret and apply applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation, standards, and Board policies.
  • Assist the development and delivery of training tools, and resources to promote compliance and program effectiveness.
  • Maintain a visible presence in workplaces to promote safety awareness and reinforce the Board’s commitment to health and safety.
  • Investigate health and safety concerns (e.g., indoor air quality, water quality, workplace conditions, contractor/construction activities) through site visits, research, and appropriate testing.
  • Accompany regulatory officials during inspections and facilitate compliance with orders.
  • Initiate, monitor, and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Respond to inquiries from staff, students, parents, contractors, regulatory agencies, and community members.
  • Assist in maintaining required records, reports, and documentation to support legislative compliance.
  • Act as an information resource to municipal and provincial enforcement agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in the development and review of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and support contract administration, as required.
  • Provide legislative interpretation and technical expertise to JHSCs and coordinate related training and committee participation in inspections and investigations.
  • Contribute to the management of environmental health and protection programs, including hazardous waste management.
  • Provide technical guidance on the safe use, handling, and storage of chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Assist with environmental risk assessments related to property acquisitions and disposals and participate in product evaluations to ensure environmental and health compliance.
  • Monitor changes to legislation to assist in compliance and emerging best practices in occupational health and safety.
  • Support the development and review of policies, procedures, standards, and audit tools.
  • Conduct audits and contribute to trend analysis to inform program improvements.
  • Maintain relevant databases and records to support reporting and program oversight.
  • Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline with one year related experience supporting a health and safety program for a large, multi-site, unionized employer, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience investigating workplace health and safety concerns and providing recommendations in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and related regulations.
  • Knowledge of Board and/or departmental policies and procedures, collective agreements, employment and labour legislation, and relevant Ministry directives.
  • Knowledge of occupational hygiene testing equipment and methodologies, with the ability to interpret technical data from multiple sources.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, presentation and project management tools, and specialized health and safety information systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to negotiate and resolve health and safety issues.
  • Experience delivering training and presenting to adult learners.
  • Strong planning, organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Proven ability in promoting equitable practices which value inclusiveness and diversity.

Special Requirements

  • Provision of own vehicle for Board Business. Requires regular travel across the TDSB.
