Department Information

The South Slave Divisional Education Council is the governing education body for the South Slave Division as legislated under the Education Act. Established as a corporation at arm’s length from the Territorial Government, the SSDEC consists of one member selected from each of the five locally elected District Education Authorities (DEAs) that represent the communities of Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, Hay River, Lutsel K’e and K'atlodeeche. The SSDEC serves approximately 1300 students in eight schools, is responsible for a staff of approximately 185 administrators, teachers and support staff and a budget of over 25 million. The Superintendent and staff of the SSDEC provide professional advice; educational, administrative, technical and financial services; monitoring and support and assistance to the SSDEC, community-based DEAs and their secretary treasurers, school administrators and staff, stakeholders, members of the public, and particularly, students and their families in order to ensure the delivery of quality educational programs and services within the division.

Job Information

The Support Assistant (SA) is responsible for assisting with instruction and providing support and encouragement to students diagnosed with special needs and/ or who require additional attention in order to ensure all students have the opportunity for a successful and meaningful learning experience. The SA operates under the Education Act and the policies and procedures established by the district, region and school.

You will report to the Principal of Paul William Kaeser Highschool, Program Support Teacher and/or Classroom Teachers. The position is responsible for assisting with implementing specialized and modified learning and education activities in order to provide a positive learning experience for students with special needs or students who require additional support. The SA is responsible for working with special needs/additional needs students either individually or in small groups to provide academic assistance in mainly core areas such as reading and math. The SA is also responsible for ensuring that special needs/additional needs students are provided with positive learning environments and have an opportunity to learn effective listening and communications skills, and good work habits. In particular, the SA is responsible for assisting with implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) so that students are provided with a learning environment that promotes a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
Completion of Grade 12 combined with related training in working with special needs students and experience in an educational environment. Equivalencies may be considered.
