The Opportunity

Corporate Facilities provides the City of Barrie with expertise in four key service areas: facility planning, design and construction; maintenance and property management, facility asset management and energy management. As a Centre of Excellence for a large and complex inventory of physical assets, the department comprises all the necessary functions and lines of business to ensure the full life-cycle management of the City of Barrie's facility and property portfolios.

Under the general guidance of the Corporate Facilities Foreperson the Facilities Groundskeeper position is responsible for maintaining the walkways, stairs, grass, garden beds and parking lots of the City of Barrie Facilities to ensure that the visitors and City staff can access safely. In addition, the position is responsible for grooming, lining and set up of sports fields. Additionally, in accordance with seasonal requirements, in the spring, summer and fall, this position maintains and repairs the walkways, grass, stairs and other outside furnishings. In the winter, this position assists in plowing, sanding and salting of facility parking lots, walkways, stairs, paths and year-round general labour tasks. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the upkeep of the Citys facilities based on seasonal requirements.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

Experience

  • Six (6) months of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
  • Demonstrated experience working in a municipal environment
  • Demonstrated experience in municipal construction and maintenance

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: WHMIS and Book 7 of the Ontario Traffic Manual, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related regulations and associated protocols required to ensure a safe working environment.
  • General knowledge of the following principles and standards: municipal construction, maintenance and equipment operations; vehicle and equipment safety, safe lifting and handling procedures; and collection and disposal procedures for debris, litter and bulky items.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • conduct landscaping and hard surface repairs
    • operate manual and motorized hand tools
    • perform strenuous work, including heavy lifting of objects exceeding 20kgs
    • effectively lead and direct an assigned crew
    • write clear and concise reports
    • maintain accurate records of job materials used and time spent
  • Intermediate skills include: Customer Service; Interpersonal: Written Communication
  • Availability to work outside of schedule work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence in good standing

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

  • Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Other Important Information

Location: 161 Bradford Street, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:

  • Pay Level: Level 3
  • Yearly Salary: $55,827.20 to $66,830.40
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $26.84 to $32.13
