Engineer - Intermediate or Senior (Interconnections Planning)

Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid
Annual salary: $ 107,000.00 - 135,300.00
What you'll do
The successful candidate will join the Interconnection Planning group (one of the groups under Transmission Planning) as
an Engineer. The group is one of the key technical groups in BC Hydro to support the company's business in clean energy
transition and province electricity trades.
The core functions of the Interconnection Planning group include:
- To perform transmission planning work in a multi-disciplines team environment for adequately connecting all types of new/
modified generating facilities into the grid.
- To perform transmission planning work for Long-term Firm Point to Point Transmission Service to support the province
electricity trades.
- To perform detailed technical assessments to accept generator modeling submissions for all the units currently operating
in the BC Hydro system and ensure that the accepted modeling info is suitable for the grid planning and operation.
- To deliver the above core functions, compliance with relevant NERC Mandatory Reliability Standards (MRS), WECC
planning criteria, and other regulatory requirements such as those prescribed in the OATT is essential.
Duties Include:
- Perform power system analysis including power flow study, short circuit analysis, and transient stability study for a
complex transmission system to establish transfer capability, identify potential system constraints, propose system
reinforcement options, and recommend transmission solutions with justifications. To deliver the planning assignments,
correct understanding and proper application of the relevant planning standards and criteria is essential.
- Conduct generation interconnection studies, initiate transmission reinforcement solutions to accommodate new or
materially modified generator interconnection in meeting the transmission planning standards and criteria, and author
generation interconnection study reports with multi-disciplines inputs for public consumptions.
- Perform technical review of generation modeling verification submissions for generating facilities with various technologies
including synchronous generators and inverter-based generators and document the review results in a study report. A good
understanding of generation technologies and modeling techniques would be an asset.
- With broad ability of engineering judgment and decision making, initiate transmission reinforcement projects with need
justification, option comparison, probabilistic reliability evaluations, economic analysis, and risk assessment. Prepare
project investment summary to support BC Hydro capital planning and development process.
- Play active role as a subject matter expert in transmission planning to respond to information inquiries from customers, the
public, and the regulators to fulfill BC Hydro’s obligations and commitments; and to support various BC Hydro business
processes, including generation interconnection service and long-term transmission service under OATT, generator
modeling verifications, transmission and generation operation and sustainment, energy procurement and resource planning,
etc.
- Develop and maintain effective professional relationship with internal and external customers in addressing service
requests for performing those specialized engineering studies and services; and provide leadership and technical direction
to the supporting staff and chair meetings for any discussion related to transmission planning with internal and external
stakeholders.
- Provide advice to team members and support their work initiative. Builds influential relationships with other professionals,
the management and the staff.
What you bring
- Bachelor or higher academic degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities with experience in
Electric Power System. Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and
Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
- For Intermediate Engineer - minimum of 4 (four) years of work experience in electric utilities
- For Sr. Engineer - minimum of 8 (eight) years of work experience in electric utilities with a specific emphasis on power
system studies and modeling. Demonstrated hands-on skills on transmission system analysis using power system
simulation tools, PSS/E, GE-PSLF, DSA Tools or equivalent professional programs such as Power World etc.
- Extensive knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts applied to transmission planning and operations, transmission
and station designs, and power system protections and controls. Solid understanding of transmission utility business and
regulation.
- Well developed verbal and written communication, presentation, leadership, interpersonal and facilitation skills, and ability
to work effectively in a team environment is essential.
- Preference will be given to candidates with strong academic background like Master or PhD on Power System and
expertise in the planning and operation of transmission systems in power utility setting.
- Candidates with less working experience in power system studies will be considered at the appropriate level.
