Description

The Laboratory Phlebotomist Technician, under direct supervision, performs laboratory support procedures which require limited technical skill and responsibilities. The Laboratory Phlebotomist Technician will be responsible for performing all aspects of blood collection, including venous and capillary blood samples from adults, children and neo-nates, in-patients, outpatients and

patients from special areas such as dialysis, chemotherapy, etc. The Lab Phlebotomist Technician will make trips for phlebotomy to hospital wards at pre-determined times, and as requested while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

Under the direction/supervision of a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) or qualified Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), the Lab Phlebotomist Technician works in collaboration with hospital systems to provide optimal patient-centered care while obtaining blood. They demonstrate compassion and prioritize care for patients and ensure each patient’s needs are met in a timely manner.

The clerical, technical and quality assurance responsibilities of this position include positive patient identification, procuring specimens, accessioning samples, preparing specimens for analysis or referral, storing, and disposing of specimens, maintaining records and observing principle of data security and patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy Technician Certificate or equivalent experience

  • Phlebotomy training and recent phlebotomy experience required

  • Experience with processing specimens, operating laboratory instruments preferred

  • Thorough knowledge and proficiency in current laboratory procedures

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of a multicultural community and diverse population

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and part of a multi-disciplinary team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize tasks/responsibilities

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Reliable attendance record

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital was founded in 1897, and was originally known as the Rat Portage Jubilee Hospital and then the Kenora General Hospital. Through the years a series of additions and renovations took place to meet the expanding needs of the population. On May 1, 1968, the St. Joseph's Hospital and the Kenora General Hospital amalgamated to form the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Treating well over 30,000 people per year, Lake of the Woods District Hospital is Northwestern Ontario's largest hospital outside of Thunder Bay.

The Hospital's core programs include emergency and ambulatory care, chronic care, mental health, maternal and child health, and acute care services which include general medicine, intensive care and surgical services. It also manages a broad range of services including dialysis, chemotherapy, diagnostic imaging, mammography, ultrasound, addiction counseling and detoxification, a sexual assault centre, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services, ambulance (land and dedicated air), palliative care and various education programs.
