Are you familiar with building systems and maintenance operations with basic plumbing and mechanical skills? If so, we invite you to explore the opportunity to deliver plumbing and maintenance services at the Maplehurst Correctional Centre. This position provides skilled assistance in the day-to-day operation of a fully integrated maintenance program that ensures our facilities are properly maintained; and provides a safe and comfortable environment.

In this role, your responsibilities will involve the basic upkeep and restoration of plumbing, sanitation, and heating systems, as well as assisting fellow maintenance staff as required. This position offers the advantage of working indoors at a single, centralized site.

About the job

In this role, you will:

  • correctly install and/or exchange fixtures, filters and belts (i.e. for bathtubs, toilets, water controls, radiators)
  • install, service and replace plumbing equipment (i.e. drainage and sewer lines, toilets, pneumatic and motorized valves, pumps and tanks)
  • ensure the safety and integrity of installations to prevent injuries to staff and inmates
  • perform necessary quality assurance checks, and locate and isolate problems raised by monitoring systems
  • discuss requests for new installations or extensive repairs and explain technical matters in easily understood terms
  • prepare reports, maintain logs and prepare sketches and plans for approval of manager

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • You are certified as a plumber by the designated Ministry of the Ontario government.
  • You currently possess a certificate in First Aid and Heartsaver or your are able and willing to obtain certification.

Technical knowledge:

  • you have knowledge of the techniques, equipment and tools used in plumbing and general maintenance
  • you can understand and interpret blueprints, plans and drawings to estimate labour and material requirements and layouts
  • you can apply and interpret relevant legislation, municipal by-laws and codes, provincial building codes (i.e. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • you have knowledge of institutional security practices and procedures to ensure compliance with standards, proper equipment operation/ utilization and to maintain the safety and security of the work area
  • you have knowledge of computer related information systems and lockout/tag out procedures

Analytical, Problem Solving and Reasoning Skills:

  • you have the ability to recognize workplace hazards and security breaches for prompt corrective action
  • you can review computer output on automated systems and determine location of the problem, materials and equipment needed to affect repairs
  • you can assess causes of plumbing defects, blockages or leaks and recommend best method of repair

Communication and Computer Skills:

  • you can prepare and present technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • you use tact and diplomacy to liaise effectively with correctional and administrative staff
  • you use your computer and keyboarding skills to check monitoring systems, input data to inventory and maintenance programs and complete activity reports
  • you use your communication skills to instruct and supervise inmates engaged in beneficial labour
