What can I expect to do in this role?
Under the direction of the Director, Information Technology (IT) and Program Management, and reporting to the Manager, Information Technology Operations, the Senior DevOps / Systems Administrator provides strategic technical leadership for DevOps, cloud infrastructure and system administration of the Institute’s IT systems. The position is responsible for leading the research, selection, planning, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting and leveraging of advanced solutions. The position ensures that Institute systems are modern, functional, up-to-date, secure, and user-friendly while facilitating and supporting the ongoing enhancement and transformation of these systems.
Primary responsibilities:
- Provide strategic technical leadership for cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and system administration and expert guidance on system architecture, integration, automation, IT operations, and organization wide IT initiatives.
- Serve as the senior escalation point and subject matter expert (SME) for critical infrastructure incidents, complex service requests and new technologies, directly engaging in resolution efforts, setting standards for response and root-cause analysis and vetting new solutions.
- Stay current on latest developments in cloud-computing and DevOps practices and conduct technical research to evaluate technology evolution and associated threats and opportunities.
- Lead the design and hands-on deployment of highly available, scalable, and secure systems across AWS and SaaS platforms (e.g., AWS, Zoom, Google), supporting business continuity and growth.
- Architect, develop, and maintain infrastructure-as-code (IaC) solutions and CI/CD automation pipelines to optimize provisioning, deployment, and configuration management within AWS environments and other solutions as required.
- Oversee infrastructure deployment and upgrades, including servers, storage, and backup systems, by leading the planning, risk analysis, communication, and rollout strategies, focusing on automation and providing hands-on involvement.
- Collaborate closely on cybersecurity initiatives and maintenance, including patch management, vulnerability assessments, intrusion prevention, and endpoint protection, to strengthen the organization's security posture, aligning operations with recognized standards such as NIST and CyberSecure Canada.
- Drive the implementation and continuous enhancement of monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure operational observability, performance optimization, and proactive incident response.
- Provide technical mentorship and leadership to IT teams, ensuring adoption of IT DevOps best practices and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing, accountability, and continuous improvement through coaching and example-setting.
- Evaluate, recommend, and lead the adoption of emerging technologies and best practices based on business requirements with regards to information technologies, growth and transformation to enhance process efficiency, improve user satisfaction, increase security and/or reduce cost.
- Work closely with IT staff to ensure efficient operation of systems and continuous improvement and delivery of products and processes.
- Collaborate with software development teams to design, automate, and streamline deployment pipelines, ensuring reliable and repeatable application delivery.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams assigned to special projects and work collaboratively with employees in other sections.
- May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis.
Knowledge and Experience Requirements
Education / Experience:
- A university degree in Information Technology or Computer Science
- Five (5) to eight (8) years extensive experience in technical leadership of cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and system administration; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
The following current certifications will be considered as assets:
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Professional -or- AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Professional
- DevOps Leader and/or DevSecOps certification
- Project management certification or professional designation
Language requirement:
- Fluency in both French and English is an asset
- English is required
Skills and experience required:
- Experience with strategic planning and digital evolution.
- Sound project management knowledge including several years of experience
- Experience writing business cases & technology strategy/design documents
- Good understanding of ITIL best-practices
- Extensive knowledge of AWS Environment
- Extensive experience with Linux and bash scripting
- Extensive experience configuring and optimizing a LEMP Stack
- Strong troubleshooting skills across cloud infrastructure, application performance and system-level issues
- Strong System administration skills managing complex and heavily integrated SaaS platforms
- Self-motivated with initiative to get tasks completed and issues resolved.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with competing priorities.
- Good customer service and interpersonal skills.
Compensation Package
- Salary Range: $111,108 to $138 884 (G7)
