Your Opportunity Stantec is looking for a Fire Alarm Designer in our Markham office. This role will be focused on the delivery of various fire alarm projects and may include design of special suppression systems; Fire Code analyses, Fire Hazard Assessments, and system testing/commissioning. The successful candidate will work in a team environment, working closely with both junior and senior staff to deliver projects, and will have the opportunity to deal directly with clients for proposals and delivery of projects. The position will involve the application fire and life safety principles to fire alarm systems design projects as well as the assessment of existing systems. The position requires the ability to assess conditions of existing systems, analyze performance and Code conformance, prepare written reports with cost estimates, complete design calculations for fire alarm systems, complete drawings and specifications, undertake site review and verification of systems, and advise clients on recommended fire alarm system features. In addition to fire alarm design, the position may also involve the application of provincial and national building and fire codes, standards, and best practice guidelines related to the storage, use and handling of hazardous materials.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Design fire alarm systems including detection, clean agent and other related systems;
- Assess fire and life safety performance of new and existing building fire protection systems using applicable Codes and Standards;
- Prepare technical reports;
- Draft fire alarm systems and details using AutoCAD or, alternatively, mark up design concepts using Bluebeam Revu;
- Ability to model fire alarm systems using AutoDesk REVIT
- Complete design calculations as per local code and standards including but not limited to the building and fire codes, ULC, NFPA, etc.;
- Participate in design reviews, shop drawings reviews, construction site visits and verifications for various fire protection systems;
- Conduct site audits of fire protection systems performance, as-built conditions, and Code conformance;
- Review contract documents, including drawings and specifications for Code conformance;
- Participate on project teams including other fire protection personnel, contractors and other technical disciplines for successful project delivery;
- Investigate, advise, and solve unusual design problems;
- Conduct site visits to gather data on existing conditions and review construction;
- Prepare reports and other technical communication;
- Work with project teams including other staff, other technical disciplines and contractors for successful project delivery; and
- Assist in the preparation of project proposals and liaise with clients.

- Organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks on multiple projects

Education and Experience
- Diploma in fire protection engineering technology; may also consider Diploma in mechanical or electrical engineering technology with the relevant set of experience.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience, consulting experience preferred; however, design experience in a Contractor/vendor environment may be considered.
- Experience in fire alarm system design, or related systems design
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may require travel and include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
