The Provincial Government is now recruiting Marine Engineer Second Class professionals to support operations across all provincial vessels.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is recruiting for immediate vacancies for Marine Engineer Second Class positions in various vessels. The department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers and construction and management of provincial government buildings.
This includes Marine Engineer Second Class who are responsible for the mechanical operation and maintenance of the engine room and its auxiliaries on a number of routes in regions across the province and will be assigned to Vessels in the following locations:
M.V. Beaumont Hamel Vessel
M.V. Gallipoli M.V. Veteran M.V. Legionnaire
The Marine Engineer Second Class is responsible for the mechanical operation and maintenance of the engine room and its auxiliaries. You will be acting as engineer in charge of the engine room. This includes:
Supervising engine room staff and participating in activating; Operating and controlling the main engines; Inspecting, cleaning and performing electronic, plumbing, mechanical and hydraulic repairs and maintenance in accordance with departmental preventative maintenance schedules; Ensuring that back-up systems are in operational order; Accompanying the vessel as required during refit schedules and assisting technical personnel in carrying out repairs and alterations; Maintaining an adequate level of supplies and routine parts, and maintaining a defect list; Updating the maintenance program daily and developing a refit specification to be entered in the maintenance program and submitted to the Marine Superintendent eight weeks prior to scheduled refit; Completing a log abstract at the end of each shift for submission to Marine Headquarters and maintaining an up-to-date Chief Engineer’s Logbook; Maintaining equipment vital to the service such as shore generators and wharf lighting equipment that is located outside of the vessel;
Screening Criteria
As a Marine Engineer Second Class, you have experience in marine engineering and the operation of marine diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment, and experience working with modern control systems. Your Valid 2nd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate be issued by Transport Canada or equivalent as determined by the Canada Shipping Act 2001 and applicable vessel Safe Manning document, and a Valid Marine Medical Certificate.
Assessment Criteria
To be successful in this position, you’ll bring a solid knowledge of marine engineering, and you may also have knowledge of the operation and maintenance of marine diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment.
Your leadership, sound independent judgement, and strong problem-solving skill-combined with your ability to manage time and organize tasks while confidently using computer systems in your daily duties- will help ensure the effective delivery of ferry operations across vessels throughout the province. You take pride in being a collaborative team player and consistently demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safety.
