The Department of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures is looking for qualified candidates for the role of Staff Sergeant with the Conservation Officer Service Branch in Thompson, Manitoba.
Duties:
The Staff Sergeant position is responsible for the management and delivery of the Conservation Officer Service enforcement mandate, which include legislation compliance and parks safety and security at the compliance area level. This position is also accountable for the successful management and delivery of the Department’s wildlife, fishery, crown land, and forestry programs within the compliance area and may become involved in wildfire suppression duties.

Qualifications:
Essential:
- Graduate of a minimum two-year program from a university or college in resource management studies or environmental management studies or another field of study acceptable to the chief conservation officer, including experience working in a multi-disciplined environment as a conservation officer at a level equivalent to a Sergeant in Manitoba
- Extensive knowledge and experience enforcing natural resource legislation, law enforcement and legislative compliance
- Experience effectively supervising staff, including conducting performance management, progressive discipline, and labour relations
- Experience in conflict resolution
- Experience in financial management
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach others
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Strong written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of people
- Strong prioritization and organization skills with the ability to deal with changing workloads and demands
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work effectively under stressful situations
Desired:
- Knowledge and experience in wildfire suppression activities

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Must possess and maintain a full and valid class 4 Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, with no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Manitoba Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Enhanced Security Screening (Level 4).

Must be eligible for appointment as a Manitoba Conservation Officer as specified in the Conservation Officers Act and Regulations.

Must be willing and able to travel including overnight stays for extended periods of time.

Must be willing and able to work irregular shifts, including evenings, weekends, overtime, stand-by and attend to after-hour callouts

Must be able to successfully complete an approved Psychological Assessment (c/o COS to handle processing with outside agency).

Must be able to successfully complete the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (PARE - exit level 4:45 min), Police Fitness Assessment (PFA - Field Version) or Winnipeg Police Service Physical Abilities Test (WPS-PAT - exit level 4:15 min). The Conservation Officer Service will accept successful PARE, PFA or WPS-PAT tests dated within six months prior to the application deadline and must be completed prior to July 24, 2026 . Must be physically able to perform the duties of this position including conducting outdoor investigations and patrols in adverse weather conditions, walking over rough terrain, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, and carrying up to 25 lbs.
