About the role

Financial Services provides all accounting and purchasing services for the University of Winnipeg. The Research and Accounts Payable Manager is a full-time continuing role providing leadership for the Research Accounting and Accounts Payable departments. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and making ongoing process improvements, implementing efficiencies and automating processes where possible.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the accounting and manages the award life-cycle for all Award types.
  • Monitors Award account transactions for over-expenditures and unusual transactions; coordinates with Researchers and the Research Office to correct errors and resolve over-expended accounts.
  • Works closely with the Director, Awards and Financial Aid and the Director of Finance of the University of Winnipeg Foundation to review and monitor Trust award spending.
  • Oversees the accounting of the TPDA/CPAA and Workstudy Awards, coordinating reviews with VP Academic and Awards and Financial Aid.
  • Oversees the preparation of and approves submission of annual and periodic external financial statements for the federal government and other funding agencies, Research Support Fund, government and industry funding partners, preparation of the University’s consolidated financial statements, and any required year-end analysis, review and reporting for external auditors.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the Research and Accounts Payable team.
  • Establishes KPIs, leverage data analytics to monitor trends, measure performance, and inform decisions.
  • Coordinates and supports the team during month-end and year-end closing activities, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Mentors staff in their duties and maintains a continuous level of engagement within the team
  • Responsible for management functions including hiring and performance management, as well as training and development.
  • Performs review of current Accounts Payable, Research and Awards, and other relevant policies and procedures and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Enforces compliance with the department’s policies and procedures across the university and empowers the Research and Accounts Payable team in enforcing the policies and procedures.
  • Reviews current processes, identify opportunities for streamlining, and implement changes and best practices across all functions.
  • Identifies and implements process automation.
  • Ongoing continuous process improvement of processes and procedures.
  • Establishes a close working relationship with the Director of the Research Office, collaborating on ways to improve the researcher’s overall experience.
  • Develops relationships with key stakeholders across the university to assist in the implementation of new processes or systems.
  • Creates a platform for educating faculty and staff on Research & Awards and Accounts Payable processes and policies through video, live and online demonstrations, online Q&A sessions and meetings, etc.
  • Administrative duties as required.
  • Troubleshoots issues in relation to both the Awards and AP functionality in the financial system; working with the Senior Financial Systems Analyst to resolve issues.
  • Assists the team during busy periods and providing vacation coverage when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business Administration or related discipline.
  • Charted Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred.
  • 5 years of directly related experience.
  • Management/supervisory experience required.
  • Extensive AP experience is an asset; knowledge of AP process, policies and best practices
  • Experience with the administration and management of research or other types of grants, preferably in a higher education or public sector environment preferred.
  • Project management experience is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively across multiple departments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and faculty.
  • Must be able to tactfully deal with others and present a positive image of the University of Winnipeg.
  • High level proficiency with Excel (e.g., create pivot tables and use formulas)..
  • Proven problem-solving skills.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $91,568 to $115,996 annually.

Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week.
