The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is leading the transformation of Alberta’s electricity market at a pivotal moment for the industry. As we evolve the province’s wholesale electricity markets to meet the growing demands of affordability, reliability, and decarbonization, we are seeking motivated professionals to join our Market Design team in a Senior Market Design role. In this role, you will apply your expertise in economics, engineering, or a related discipline to help design and implement key components of Alberta’s restructured electricity market, shaping how the system adapts to the challenges of the future. You bring a strong understanding of Alberta’s current market framework, an interest in the changes introduced through the Restructured Energy Market (REM), and a curiosity to explore innovative solutions while engaging with diverse perspectives.
This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.
KeyAccountabilities:

Engage external stakeholders, including industry participants, government, and agencies, to develop and advance market design solutions

Assess market design alternatives by evaluating economic efficiency, market impacts, stakeholder effects, and operational implications

Conduct independent research on economic, technical, and policy aspects of market design best practices across other jurisdictions
-
Communicate market design options and implications through clear written and verbal materials, including memos, reports, and presentations
-
Collaborate with cross-functional AESO experts to identify, document, and build alignment on market changes
-
Ensure market design initiatives are aligned and consistent with broader AESO programs and priorities
-
Contribute as an active member of the broader Markets team

Share subject matter expertise and insights across the organization

Provide technical guidance and analytical support for market development activities

A combination of these experiences and qualities will support your success in this role:

10+ years of experience working in electricity markets is preferred

Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Business, or a related discipline

Master’s degree considered an asset

Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements within the electric utility sector

Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and clearly convey complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Demonstrated ability to build strong business and technical relationships that foster trust and collaboration

Adaptable and resilient, with the ability to respond effectively to changing priorities and timelines

Strong business acumen and a solid understanding of competitive electricity markets

What do we do Manage and plan the power grid 24 hours a day When you need power, you expect it. We work with industry partners to keep electricity flowing throughout the province. Our system controllers balance supply and demand 24/7, making sure four million Albertans have power when they need it.
Manage and operate the energy markets In Alberta, companies own generation, transmission and distribution facilities. We dispatch the power sold by generators, using the lowest-priced electricity first and then the next lowest until the need for power has been satisfied. We also enforce transmission tariffs and regulations, keeping the market fair and open for everyone.
Plan the future of the system and its infrastructure As Alberta grows, so does its need for electricity. We plan ahead and expand the grid, ensuring the right transmission lines are built as efficiently as possible. As the province moves away from coal-fired power plants, we're enabling investment in renewable energy. In everything we do, our eye is always on the future.
