Position Summary
Halifax, Hybrid
As part of the AJISS Coastal Support team, the Technical Specialist – Hull will support the Royal Canadian Navy Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) and Joint Support Ship (JSS) class vessels managed by Thales under the AOPS & JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) contract.
Accountable to the Resource Manager – Coastal Support but responsive to the Coastal Engineering Services Lead, the Technical Specialist – Hull supports the Service Delivery and Engineering teams with corrective maintenance, engineering changes, certification management and planned maintenance changes as they relate to various equipment and structural issues.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The Technical Specialist - Hull is responsive to the AJISS Engineering Services Lead and is required to:
- Conduct investigations either on board the ship while alongside or within the Technical Document Package (TDP);
- Liaise with OEMs, service providers and ship staff to support the investigation and resolution of defects;
- Develop Work Instructions and Statements of Work (SOW) to support the resolution of defects;
- Identify inadequacies within the TDP and propose improvement/corrections;
- Support the Service Delivery team as required with the management of Service Providers conducting work on board the ship;
- Provide technical advice to enable hull systems to be correctly operated or maintained;
- Develop a good working relationship within Thales and the customer's organization to ensure coordination and rapid resolution of issues;
- Support the LCMM (Life Cycle Materiel Manager) & Supportability teams with the identification/assessment of alternate parts;
- Support the LCMM & Supportability teams with the assessment of obsolescence issues; and
- Support the LCMM & Engineering team with various activities such as development and implementation of Engineering Changes, creation of Deviations & Waivers or surveys on board the ship while alongside.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum education and certification requirements:
3-year technical program diploma (for Technologists) in a marine technical field offered by a recognized technical institute; OR
Certified as a technologist by a recognized provincial, state, or federal (national) licensing body in a relevant field; OR
Certified as one of the following trades of the Canadian Armed Forces: QL 6A or 6B Hull Technician

Strong working knowledge in the maintenance, operation, design and/or troubleshooting of a wide range of marine hull systems, lifting point/appliances, paint and preservation, pipefitting and plumbing, welding methods, machinery systems and ship structure;

Strong communication skills (oral and written);

Team player;

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
One or more of the following is preferred:
- Certified as a coatings inspector by a recognized licensing body (NACE Level 2 or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years experience in the marine environment;
- Certified as a welding inspector (CWB Level 2 or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years experience in the marine environment; OR Previous experience working with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard;
- Familiarity with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations;
- 3-year technical program diploma in naval architecture;
- Knowledge of hull structures, repairs and modification to ship hulls, inspections, surveys and quality control, and corrosion control;
- Other valid certifications (such as non-destructive testing and marine surveying).
Physical Demands
- Mix of office work and work in dockyards and onboard naval ships;
- Will be required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of naval ships involving bending and twisting;
- Willing to work aloft and in confined spaces on board ships (training to be provided)
Special Position Requirements
- Schedule: 40 hours per week;
- Work Location: Hybrid: Will be required to work from the Halifax dockyard (almost 100% of the time when a ship is alongside) and home/Thales office (when no ships are alongside);
- Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships or the AJISS/MWAV Enterprise

The reference Total Target Compensation(TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between
Total Target Cash (TTC) 76,208.54 - 128,924.64 CAD Annual
