The opportunity:

The Indoor Climbing Leader plays a key role in the delivery and supervision of indoor climbing activities. Responsibilities include providing instruction, setting routes, and supervising users. The role also involves supporting safety and risk management, maintaining equipment and the facility, and assisting with programming. The Indoor Climbing Leader helps ensure that all users have a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Undergraduate degree in related discipline required, preferably in Recreation or Sport Administration studies.
  • Current Level Two Indoor Climbing Gym Instructor Certification (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) required.
  • First Aid / CPR certification required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a climbing environment required.
  • High comfort level and experience with climbing harnesses, ropes, belay devices, carabineers and other related climbing apparatus required.
  • Experience with route setting required including planning and executing
  • Actively participating in climbing is required.
  • Experience with researching industry trends is required.
  • Must have experience working in a Recreation setting and understand the elements of a quality program.
  • Experience with climbing centre operation/maintenance/instruction.
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, supervising and scheduling staff as well as program development and evaluation in a climbing environment is preferred.
  • Experience with risk management is an asset.
  • Outdoor Climbing/guiding experience would be an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with budgeting and program financial analysis preferred.
  • Experience establishing and directing a climbing program preferred.
  • Knowledge of programming elements related to delivering climbing programs required.
  • Strong Computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills required.
  • Excellent organization skills are required.
  • Excellent leadership skills required.
  • Indoor climbing skills and experience safely teaching indoor climbing skills required.
  • Specific knowledge and experience in administration of climbing programs required.
  • Must be tact and diplomacy.
  • Must be self-directed and creative.
  • Ability to work efficiently required.
  • Must be physically able to move climbing equipment.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and work as a member of a team required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and multi-task is required.
  • Ability to train and supervise staff required.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations required.
  • Positive customer service skills with an open attitude to working with a diverse population required.
  • Passion for recreation and climbing required.
  • Must have a proven track record of Continuous Improvement.
  • Must be able to manage a healthy Work/Life balance.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
