As a Senior Planner you will lead, develop and implement plans, strategies and policies that guide the City's future urban and community development, ensuring it aligns with Corporate strategic goals and values. You will also coach, mentor and train staff on policies, process and technical content that supports the growth of the team's knowledge and skills.

This posting is recruiting for positions on four teams including Growth Strategy (New Communities and Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Program), Regional Planning, Local Area Planning (Strategic Initiatives), and Land Use Bylaw. Primary duties include:

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams in the development and implementation of strategic planning initiatives that contribute to long-term goals and objectives.
  • Develop project plans, set priorities, evaluate risk, determine governance, coordinate teams, assign work to team members, provide progress reports and make recommendations on project and cross-corporate project delivery.
  • Conduct research, prioritize and respond to inquiries and mange escalations to the leadership team.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to resolve process and planning policy issues.
  • Prepare and present planning policies, technical reports and recommendations to Committees and Council
  • Respond to high priority issues, politically sensitive situations and customer service requests.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Planning that is recognized by the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) or another provincial, territorial institute or association representing the Planning profession in Canada.
  • At least 6 years of progressively more responsible and varied experience in the planning profession including experience working in an urban environment, delivering solutions and recommendations in complex planning and development initiatives and providing advice and counsel to senior leadership teams.
  • A master's degree is considered an asset.
  • Experience leading complex projects that required a high level of expertise and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to communicate to a wide range of audiences, such as City Council, committees, citizens and city building partners.
  • The successful applicant will have a proven ability to make difficult decisions in a political and fast-paced environment on politically sensitive topics requiring diplomacy and sensitivity.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Position Type: 3 Permanent and 3 Temporary (up to 22 months)

Location: 133 6 Avenue SE

Compensation: Pay Grade 14 $51.84 - 69.28 per hour

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day

work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
