In this role, the Director of Finance will be a key part of a high-performing operational leadership team and dedicated to supporting the financial oversight of Bird’s Civil and Infrastructure Business Unit for Eastern Canada. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing financial and accounting leadership for three divisions within the business unit, ensuring the complete and efficient management of financial matters. You will work closely with operational leadership, as well as project teams and finance leadership to ensure timely and accurate cost management, forecasting, and financial reporting.

This position will be primarily in-office based out of one of our Ajax (ON), Mississauga (ON) or Montreal (QC) office locations.

What You Will Be Working On

  • Lead, coach and mentor a team of divisional finance professionals supporting diverse operational requirements, ensuring high performance, critical succession planning is in place and the professional development of your team.
  • Being a proactive business partner to the Business Unit’s operational leadership, providing financial guidance and leadership to assist with a diverse range of unpredictable challenges.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to provide financial insights and support for pursuits, project planning and execution.
  • Actively monitor project-level financial performance, including revenue recognition, cost tracking, margin analysis, claims / disputes and project cash flow.
  • Lead the development of operational budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis for projects, overhead and the divisions.
  • Provide actionable insights to improve profitability and mitigate financial risks.
  • Actively support mid-term ERP conversion and process alignment for one division.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and company policies, including internal controls and external audit requirements.
  • Manage the production of monthly, quarterly and annual executive reporting in respect of the financial performance of the Business Unit.
  • Support the development and implementation of financial systems and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ad-hoc financial assignments and projects as required.

What We Are Looking For

  • CPA, CFA or equivalent professional designation.
  • University degree in Finance or Accounting.
  • 10+ years of progressive finance experience, with at least 5 years in a management role within construction, infrastructure, or related industries.
  • Strong understanding of project accounting and cost control.
  • Experience with construction major projects is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in a public company and / or IFRS accounting standards would be considered an asset.
  • Strategic thinker with strong business acumen.
  • Ability to build relationships, influence and collaborate across a growing national organization with teams and stakeholders across multiple geographies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including presentations, with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts and delivery models including IPD and Alliance, ideally having worked with external Joint Ventures.
  • Ability to manage a large volume of work and consistently meet deadlines while ensuring high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities, capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills that can be brought to varied and unpredictable situations and challenges.
