Training
Multiple locations and travel is expected for all learners throughout the program. Locations include Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Prince George.
Job Summary
The Advanced Care Flight Paramedic (ACFP) reports to the Paramedic Supervisor/or designate, and is responsible for the assessment, treatment, transportation, and continuous clinical monitoring of injured or ill patients. The role collaborates with Critical Care Paramedic Advisor (CCPA), Emergency Physician Online Support (EPOS) and the Paramedic Specialist (PS) group as consulting parties and performs duties in a variety of emergency responses vehicles including helicopters, small jets/planes, and/or ground ambulances.
The ACFP works in accordance with BCEHS ACFP Treatment Guidelines and legislation administered by BC Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (BC EMALB) Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Schedule 1 and 2 and within the ACFP defined operational scope, in compliance with established standard operating policies, guidelines and procedures.
The role advocates on behalf of patients and communicates and interacts effectively with co-workers, other allied health care professionals and public safety partners to ensure safe, proficient, and efficient patient care and transportation.
Key Accountabilities
Provides quality patient care in pre-hospital emergency situations in a variety of emergency responses (land, air, and sea vehicles). Completes a comprehensive assessment of the patient, establishes a physiological based problem list and subsequent treatment plan, to meet the physiological needs of the patient, within ACFP scope of practice and established policies, guidelines, and procedures. Communicates treatment plans to EPOS, PS and/or CCPAs, the sending physician, nursing, and allied health care staff, attending paramedics, family members and bystanders, for safe implementation of the patient’s treatment plan. Implements patient treatment plans and continuously monitors the patient for physiological changes with limited communication during air transport. Ensures safe, proficient, and efficient patient care and transportation. Maintains current knowledge and skill required for the position. Maintains familiarity with all Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) formulary, equipment, and logistics. Functions as a partner for CCP resources when an ACFP/CCP configuration is required. Provides directions to paramedics, first responders, patients and other partners and supervises observers on car and/or trainees, as required. Participates in formal/informal education, program development and mentoring to promote and support staff development. Identifies issues and strategies for addressing actual/potential complex program or system-wide problems and concerns to enhance service delivery and patient care. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education Training and Experience
Valid Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) License issued by the BC Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Branch (EMALB) Unrestricted/restricted valid Class 1, 2 or 4 British Columbia driver’s license 3 (three) years plus one day of previous experience at an ACP license level
Skills And Abilities
Working knowledge of treatment guidelines, policies and procedures, local service standards, and business unit standards. Working knowledge of flight physiology, gas laws, primary stressors of flight, and tolerances to the primary stressors on both crews and patients. Demonstrated ability to perform at a high degree of independence in clinical practice. Demonstrated ability to manage changing priorities and competing demands to accomplish objectives in a busy, fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, identify key factors and underlying causes, and generate solutions. Demonstrated ability to maintain professional, courteous, respectful relationships with all patients, co-workers, other emergencies, and health care providers. Demonstrated ability to maintain clear and open communications with internal and external clients. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively within diverse internal and external partners. Demonstrated ability to remain calm in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to maintain currency on training requirements identified by the employer. Demonstrated ability to provide directions to other paramedics, first responders and others including patients. Ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, and calendar applications.
Selection Process
BCEHS must first give preference to qualified, internal applicants before we are able to consider qualified, external applicants.
Applications will be reviewed up to the closing date of the posting. We anticipate formal interviews and clinical assessments with shortlisted candidates will be held in Vancouver and via video conference, starting in summer 2026. Candidates will be required to successfully complete our criminal record check and a pre-hire medical and physical capacity assessment.
As a condition of receiving paid PCFP/ACFP training, eligible employees must complete a return of service agreement.
