Core Functions The Gladue Writer will write and submit Gladue Reports required for indigenous clients facing court proceedings. Gladue reports are based on paragraph 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code of Canada with the goal of presenting a sentencing court with a thorough portrait of our indigenous clients’ history and unique circumstances to ensure all mitigating factors are considered, leading to an appropriate sentencing. The Gladue Writer is responsible for gathering information, and developing a comprehensive portrait of the clients’ story, as well as presenting sentencing options aligned with our clients’ reality, heritage, and cultural context.
Functional Responsibilities
- Prepare comprehensive, accurate, objective, and clear reports that include Gladue factors and detailed restorative justice options.
- Present Gladue Reports and written and verbal submissions to the court.
- Collaborate with local support groups, social services, counsellors, employers, and Community Reintegration Officers (CROs) to consider recommendations or alternative plans to incarceration.
- Work with proofreader on reports before submission to ensure quality reports
- Track timelines for upcoming trials and sentencing hearings to ensure timely submission of Gladue Reports to the court, i.e. within a reasonable timeline before court and sentencing hearing dates.
Interaction/Communication Responsibilities
- Meet with clients, family members and community services for inputs in the preparation of Gladue Reports and submissions for the court.
- Present to key stakeholders and at events to explain Gladue Reports and services offered.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with Justice personnel (judges, defense lawyer, crown attorney) in relation to the production of Gladue reports
- Work closely with student Gladue interns.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Prepare updates and regular reports for the Assistant Director.
- Provide overall statistics and prepare reports as requested regarding clients who received Gladue Reports.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications Education:
- College diploma in Corrections, Justice, Social Work, or a related field.
Experience
- Three to five years of relevant work experience in an indigenous context (Eeyou Istchee)
- Experience in writing, reporting, copy writing or related field, an asset
Language
- Fluent in Cree
- Ability to write and speak well in English.
- Ability to write and speak in French

- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple files.

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.

The Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) represents the approximately 20,000 Crees of Eeyou Istchee. The Cree Nation Government exercises governmental and administrative functions on behalf of the Cree Nation.
