ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Program Manager, Traffic Signal Operations, is responsible for providing technical operational support capability to ensure traffic operational characteristics are efficient and effective along the regional road network; assessing, analyzing and recommending traffic signal timing revision and implementation; reviewing and analyzing traffic flows and preparing recommendations on signal timing and adjustments to maximize traffic flow; utilizing the capabilities of the various traffic systems to minimize vehicle congestion and delays.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Directly inputs and adjusts traffic signal timing plans in response to planned and emergency traffic control issues, including flow uniformity across adjacent municipal boundaries.
  • Analyzes traffic signal performance, initiates and performs response action to operational/communication outages to ensure safe and effective ongoing performance of the Region’s traffic systems.
  • Maintains and reviews the operational performance of the traffic systems.
  • Schedules and monitors consultants carrying out system performance revisions.
  • Assists with training and development of internal staff on the operational functionality of the traffic systems.
  • Liaises with the public, area municipalities and other agencies related to traffic systems
  • Attends public and agency meetings to present the Regional position related to traffic operations and analytical results.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a three (3) year Community College Diploma Program in Transportation Engineering Technology or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in traffic operations, preferably in a municipal environment.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Knowledge and technical analytical skills related to traffic systems, management and operations.
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering design and operation principles.
  • Knowledge of traffic control system networks and communication hardware such as Multiplexers, Modems, Closed Circuit Television.
  • Knowledge of relevant procedures, standards, guidelines and legislation including Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, International Municipal Signal Association standards and National Electrical Manufacturers Association standards.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices as they relate to working with high speed and heavy traffic roadways.
  • Ability to demonstrate the Region’s core competencies.
  • Effective presentation skills related to the results of technical traffic analysis and recommendations.
  • Ability to read and interpret roadway/signal construction drawings and applicable technical manuals and specifications.
