Job Summary

Student Health & Wellness serves the unique health needs and concerns of students. Working effectively within an interprofessional, collaborative health care model, and reporting to the Medical Director and Clinical Nurse Manager, the Registered Nurse is responsible for providing quality health care and services to promote and enhance patient health and well-being. Our Registered Nurses serve patients in person and also play a critical role in telephone triage and physician referral.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide primary care advice, education and symptom management to patients (students, prenatal patients, mothers with newborns, planning for birth control, STI screening, wound care, etc.). Arrange and coordinate care, and evaluate health outcomes.

  • Screen requests for medical intervention via in-person and through telephone calls. Triage emergency patients.

  • Conduct various procedures and physical examinations (routine physicals, prenatal examinations, well baby checks, wound care, cryotherapy).

  • Dispense medications (including injections).

  • Prepare necessary requisitions and specimens for various laboratory tests.

  • Assist with planning, preparation and execution of mobile flu vaccination and STI screening clinics and other student health promotion activities.

Note

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Shifts will be scheduled on a rotating basis to deliver nursing services during the clinic hours. Clinic hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 am – 6:00 pm and Saturdays 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. Shift schedules are subject to change based on operational requirements and in accordance with the collective agreement.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse currently registered in the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia. Three to five years’ experience in an interprofessional collaborative healthcare setting (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a busy, fast-paced environment, as well as the ability to handle a large volume and wide variety of patients accessing health services.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, clinical and technical skills, as well as organizational, time management and prioritization skills.

  • Effective critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills.

  • Knowledge and awareness related to cultural competency and serving a diversity of patient populations.

  • Adherence to CRNNS standards, and a commitment to continuing education and Personal Health Information Act requirements.

Assets

  • Relevant experience and knowledge related to primary health care with knowledge of health assessment and interventions within the family practice context.

  • Mental health nursing and suicide risk assessment & intervention training.

  • Experience in health promotion activities and mobile clinic operations.

  • Proficiency in electronic medical records is required and experience with Accuro EHR.
