The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for a Library Assistant. The incumbent is part of the Resource Management & Acquisitions Department, and a member of the Electronic Resources Management team. Working both independently and collaboratively they are responsible for the acquisition, administration and maintenance of the electronic and continuing resources for internal (University of Manitoba) and external (WRHA) contracts, as well as the continuity of access and discoverability of the Libraries’ licensed and open access resources. The incumbent participates in the development and the ongoing application of procedures that support the work of the department, developing professional relationships with libraries staff, publishers, and vendors.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Library technician's diploma or equivalent relevant library experience and/or training; university education in a related field required
  • Written comprehension of other language(s) in addition to English preferred
  • Experience with computers and the Integrated Library System required
  • Four years of related academic library experience and/or training, plus detailed knowledge of library procedures, records and bibliographic tools in areas for which the incumbent is responsible as well as a capacity for organizing required
  • Experience with electronic resource access methods (e.g. EZ proxy, IP addresses, etc.) preferred
  • Experience managing licensed electronic resources in a library environment preferred
  • Experience using acquisitions and/or cataloguing functions within an automated library system preferred
  • Current experience with general office routines including business correspondence preferred
  • Experience cataloguing to AACR2 and/or RDA standards preferred
  • Familiarity with the MARC 21 bibliographic, authority, and holdings formats preferred
  • Experience using and interpreting information from the databases of publishers and library materials vendors preferred
  • Experience using Ex Libris' Alma in a Technical Services or Libraries Systems environment preferred
  • Knowledge of financial management, ordering, invoicing, budgets, accounting, and funds preferred
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Intermediate level skill using Microsoft Office 365; excellent computer file management skills required
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing required
  • Ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, staff, and business contacts required
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work quickly and accurately and the ability to work effectively in peak periods required
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collegially required
  • Ability to adapt quickly and effectively to procedural and computer system change required
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and to meet appropriate deadlines and production goals required
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze, and interpret information in order to make decisions required
  • Ability to take initiative and flexibility in problem solving and the ability to exercise good judgement in making decisions required
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service required
  • Familiarity with terms and provisions commonly used in the licensing of electronic resources preferred
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required
