The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for one Permanent, full-time position of Custodian with Facility Maintenance & Operations, Property, Fleet & Environment.

The Custodian position performs cleaning and minor maintenance functions at Eric Spicer building, 20 Mount Hope Road, Dartmouth. The cleaning functions would consist of sweeping, wet/dry mopping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning/sanitizing washrooms, stripping, waxing and polishing floors, washing walls/windows/ fixtures, and other related duties. The position encompasses a wide variety of custodial duties in various locations indoors. The position requires teamwork, flexibility, organizational skills and safety awareness. This position may be subject to call out on a rotational basis.
This position supports facilities which require security clearances. Candidates being considered for the role must successfully complete security clearance requirements that include but are not limited to a criminal record check, open source check, child abuse registry check and Federal Clearance Check.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in all areas of custodial practices, including disinfection, routine and project cleaning, ordering supplies and minor maintenance.
- Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM.
- Responsible for the safe operation of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Preparation of work reports, log books, timesheets, workplace field risk assessments.
- Communicate with the general public on a regular basis related to duties performed.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Grade 12 education or equivalent
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years previous related experience in cleaning methods, solutions, equipment, and procedures used in the care of large buildings
- Current WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, Biohazard or ability to successfully complete
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Duties and responsibilities to be performed inside and outside in varying weather conditions
- Operation of equipment and tools in difficult conditions
- Work environment may include industry acceptable levels of dust, fumes, noise, etc.
- Proficiency of custodial work in children-oriented and vulnerable population environments
- Must work well with minimum supervision
- Must have good verbal and written communication skills
- Must have good attendance and work record
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.
Candidates must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and have valid licensing, as required.

SALARY: $26.87 per hour, Group 2, according to the Collective Agreement between CUPE, Local 108, and Halifax Regional Municipality
WORK LOCATION: 375 Cowie Hill Rd., Halifax; this will be a Floater position that travels to various sites
