Position Description
Major responsibilities
- Assessment and provision of the most effective form of communication, including AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) and SGCDs (speech generating communication device), through trials and collaboration with school, family and multi-disciplinary team members.
- Communicates and interprets results of formal and informal testing to families and school personnel.
- Confirms children/students meet Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) eligibility requirements; if eligible, proceed with AADL Communication Assessment and Action Plan (CAAP) form. If not eligible, consider other funding options.
- Integrates complex assistive technology needs for access, mounting and communication and provides custom solutions to meet the child’s or student’s communication needs.
- Prepares written assessment reports for the Official Student Record, families and relevant community professionals.
- Identifies the realistic expectations and goals for communication with a vision for long-term communication competence and language use.
- Provides consultation to teachers regarding children and student’s Individualized Program Plan (IPP) goals that focus on functional communication needs in the classroom.
- Collaborates with the school learning team in the development of strategies, the adaptation of resources and setting appropriate expectations; models implementation of strategies within the classroom.
- Provides communication-focused resource material to support and facilitate educational programming, both for classroom and home.
- Provides families and school personnel with workshops and/or presentations regarding the development of speech, language, communication and literacy skills.
- Uses Response to Intervention as a fluid model consisting of data collection, problem solving and intervention to develop universal strategies in the school or classroom, providing groups of children or students with specific interventions and know when a child or student requires specialized support.
- Maintains contact with community agencies and partnerships in order to develop a coordinated program of service and to assist schools and families in accessing appropriate resources.
- Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge and awareness of the current theory and practice related to meeting the learning needs of children and students with complex communication needs.
- Identifies system level professional learning needs supporting teaching and learning in the areas of speech, language, communication and literacy.
- Uses evidence based practice to design and deliver a range of services that facilitate student participation, inclusion, social interaction and the achievement of educational goals.
- May be required to provide mentorship to other Speech Language Pathologists for capacity building and/or AADL Level 3 certification purposes.
- Performs other related duties to meet accountabilities and purpose of the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Completion of a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent.
- Registered member with the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA)
- Completed University level or equivalent coursework in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
- Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) Level 3 authorizer status required.
- Demonstrated eligibility for Level 3 authorizer status may be considered
- Familiar with current, evidence-based practice for Augmentative and Alternative (AAC) assessment and intervention
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary educational support team
- Must be familiar with the devices on the Approved Product List applicable to the AADL (Alberta Aids to Daily Living) Level 3 Service Centre, including mounting options and access equipment on the SGCD approved product list so that children or students are consistently presented with appropriate choices and guidance in the selection of an SGCD (speech generating communication device) system
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience supporting children and students with autism, nonverbal children and students, and those with complex, multi-disciplinary needs
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, coupled with strong interpersonal skills
- Awareness of the ACSLPA Bylaws, Code of Ethics and Guidelines for the Use of Support Personnel
- Sound judgment, reasoning and perspective
- Demonstrates good consulting skills including: active listening, collaboration, problem solving, flexibility, organization, and mentoring
- Familiarity with the Canada Accessibility Act as it relates to speech, language and communication
- SGCD (speech generating communication device) authorizers are expected to maintain their expertise annually as identified by Alberta Aids to Daily Living
- Personal suitability
