ABOUT YOU:

As the Community Resource Specialist, Racist Incident, you know firsthand how distressing racially-charged incidents can be, and are uniquely positioned to empathize with others who have suffered the same. You possess a minimum 2-year diploma in human/social services, or another related field. You also have prior experience in a contact centre.

ABOUT THIS ROLE:

The Community Resource Specialist is responsible for providing information and referral services, crisis and emotional support, service navigation, and short-term support and advocacy to clients of Helpline Services.

This position is scheduled to end March 31 2026, and it may subject to extension or early conclusion.

Candidates have a bona fide occupational requirement which includes lived experience of racism, discrimination, differing abilities, LGBTQ2S+ identity who can acknowledge and understand the impacts of systemic oppression and intersectionality.

  • In particular, those with lived experience of antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Black racism, anti-Asian hate, and/or anti-Indigenous racism

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to client enquiries in a timely manner by:
    • Assessing clients’ needs and assisting clients in prioritizing.
    • Providing relevant and up to date information.
    • Providing emotional support and soft counseling as required.
    • Providing appropriate referrals and problem-solving support options when referrals are limited, while ensuring any eligibility criteria are still met.
    • Providing crisis support and intervention as necessary.
  • Provides service navigation through completing referrals and required intake paperwork, conducting ongoing follow-up to determine referral outcomes, and arranging other services as required.
  • Provides advocacy and time-limited case coordination through liaising with community agencies as necessary.
  • Consults with partnered programs to maintain up-to-date information on available resources and develop community relationships.
  • Keeps appropriate case notes and maintains and provides statistics and reports regarding service delivery as required.
  • Maintains current knowledge of community resources and issues by reading assigned material and attending appropriate training.
  • Participates in ongoing quality assurance/quality improvement activities such as coaching and call reviews.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and events and workshops hosted by UWBC and Helpline Services as required.
  • May be required to compile and maintain monthly and yearly statistics for programs and related services.
  • Participates in projects and conducts tasks that are extensions of core services provided by Helpline Services.
  • Attains and maintains InformUSA certification.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Core Competencies:

  • Ability to serve diverse populations from an anti-racist, trauma-informed, and culturally humble perspective.
  • Ability to engage with clients with empathy, non-judgment, and open-mindedness.
  • Ability to research, assimilate and organize relevant information, giving exact attention to detail.
  • Experience in the human services network in British Columbia.
  • Experience in one or more social service areas such as victim services, crisis counselling, case management, justice sector, etc. is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Additional language skills are an asset.
  • Excellent risk assessment skills and judgment when dealing with possible safety and/or endangerment.
  • Ability to work independently, to set priorities and to effectively allocate time and other resources.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain co-operative working relationships with other members of staff.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and community agencies and maintain good public relations.
  • Basic proficiency computer skills and Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive
  • Ability to quickly learn new technology.

Experience/Education:

  • Minimum 2-year diploma in a related human / social service related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the human services in Metro Vancouver and the province of BC.
  • Minimum 2 years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Contact centre experience.
  • Remote working experience is an asset.
  • InformUSA certification is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standard shift block of Monday to Friday, 9:30am - 5:00pm
  • Remote working from a home office location will be necessary.

This is a bargaining unit role with CUPE Local 1936. This position is at pay grid level 11, which is $27.54 hourly.
