General Manager, Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS) $1 38 , 236 - $1 55 , 587 Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS) was established by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board and is responsible for the provision of safe, effective and efficient transportation services to approximately 28,000 students and 170 schools for both partner Boards. HWSTS utilizes a number of transportation modes that includes traditional yellow-and-black school buses, school purpose vans and the Hamilton Street Railway Transit. The current school-purpose fleet size is approximately 460 vehicles that travel approximately 35,000 kilometres daily during the school year.

The Opportunity Reporting to the Administrative Team (who is responsible to the Governance Committee), the General Manager leads Transportation Services for the district. The successful candidate develops and implements strategies, plans and projects to foster top quality home to school transportation services to meet the needs of students, schools and communities. You will provide strategic direction for the above-mentioned services, driving all aspects of HWSTS' strategy and planning, including work with internal and external partners, and ensuring positive relationships.

Key Roles And Responsibilities

  • The formulation of the consortium's strategic and operational plans including budgets, as well as the management and ongoing monitoring and adherence to all transportation service contracts.
  • Lead the administration of HWSTS including a team of 10 staff, responsible for its accurate, efficient, and strategic planning including the comprehensive routing and mapping systems, key performance indicators, compliance with all Ministry reporting requirements, information on transportation infrastructure, modes and needs within our district.
  • Continuous review, monitoring and leadership of critical ongoing transportation services and improvement initiatives, information specific to budgets, timelines and to determine if targets and goals are being met.
  • Using highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, the incumbent will actively promote and enhance the image of the consortium and establish links and cooperative working relationships with the Boards' administrators, staff, municipal traffic officials, Ministry of Education, police departments, school bus operators, other public institutions, and professional associations.
  • The incumbent will also be responsible for developing and recommending new policies and/or procedures, maintaining the consortium's integrity, facilitating efficiencies/optimization, and providing technical, advisory, and consultative services regarding transportation.
  • Consults with the Directors of Education's regarding inclement weather cancellations.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary qualifications in planning, computer science, business, geography, or a related field are complemented by a minimum of five to eight years of proven management experience in a business environment dealing with senior administration, public officials, and the public.
  • A team builder with experience developing and coordinating district wide initiatives.
  • A strategic leader who acts with a visionary approach to develop new working groups and cohesive team building including “outside-of-the-box” thinking recognizing safety is of utmost importance.
  • Highly effective report writing skills.
  • Experience in the administration of collective agreements, policy development and negotiating service contracts.
  • A high-level of expertise in operations and managing a large budget.
  • A commitment to learning and professional development.
  • Proficiency using GIS and/or route planning computer applications, (knowledge of BusPlanner is an asset).
  • A valid driver's license and use of a personal vehicle is required.
