Want to help Canadians understand the ways everyday economics shape our lives? If so, we’ve got the job for you. Cost of Living is looking for a producer to join the show permanently – someone who’s passionate about storytelling, economics and audio craft.. The show is based in Calgary, but this position could be located anywhere in the country.

The program

Money talks. We translate. Every week the Cost of Living looks at how big-picture economics affects our lives in ways big, small, obvious, and unseen. From Big Macs to Big Banks, the show connects the dots between the economy and everything from housing to grocery prices. As a team we’re smart, fun, slightly irreverent and dedicated to the craft of storytelling.

Your role

Working under the direction and supervision of the Senior Producer, the successful candidate will be a proven journalist with critical thinking skills and a love for digging up stories you won't hear anywhere else. We want someone who has an interest in economics and everyday pocketbook issues – a journalist who gets how to tell numbers stories on the radio with flair and ingenuity.

That means a producer who is a strong writer, can chase guests, and enjoys working on an audio show that blends the best of the radio and podcast worlds. We’re also looking for someone who can also edit audio with an ear for creative sound design and use of music. The successful candidate should be comfortable performing on-air work, whether through scripted items or talk-tapes.

We’re looking for a strong communicator, a creative journalist and a committed team player; someone who has a proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. The show is based in Calgary, so the ideal candidate doesn’t mind working Mountain Time hours, especially as the team puts the program together every week.

A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience is essential, and is something the successful candidate values and reflects in their programming decisions.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of practical and relevant experience.
  • Interest in economics and cost of living journalism.
  • Recognized experience in chasing, writing scripts and editing.
  • Strong on-air skills.
  • Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments.
  • Proven ability to produce interviews and prepare interview question lines and background material.
  • High level of organization and productivity.
  • Strong and enthusiastic team player with good communication skills. Initiative taker, with ability to be productive in individual and team settings.
  • Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling. Contributes to the diversity of perspectives on the team.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
