Career Opportunity

The TTC is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to join the Transportation Planning and Engineering team as Manager, Transportation Engineering. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the planning, engineering, and implementation of transportation initiatives that improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of TTC bus and streetcar operations across Toronto.

Reporting to the Chief Transportation Engineer, the Manager, Transportation Engineering is responsible for managing technical studies, transportation engineering projects, transit priority initiatives, including the TTC's Transit Signal Priority Program. The role provides strategic and technical leadership on major transit projects, environmental assessment studies, operational improvements, and transportation planning initiatives while supervising a team of professional engineering and technical staff.

What You Will Do

In this role, you will:

Lead and represent the department in complex technical studies involving transportation engineering, operational design, and transit priority measures for bus and streetcar operations, including engineering and operational design issues at complex intersections. This includes representing the TTC at Committees of Council.

Lead or support multi-disciplinary environmental assessment and transportation studies undertaken by the City, Province, and the TTC in support of transit priority improvements, new transit facilities, light rail projects, station expansions, facility modifications, terminals, and loops.

Manage and coordinate the TTC's multi-year, multi-million-dollar Transit Signal Priority Program, working collaboratively with internal stakeholders and City partners to improve transit service reliability and customer experience.

Investigate and resolve operational issues affecting surface transit routes reported by City staff, TTC divisions, and Joint Health and Safety Committees.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with City traffic operations, transportation planning, and engineering authorities to ensure efficient transit operations are maintained and enhanced through roadway and signal modifications.

Manage and coordinate planning and engineering activities associated with capital and special projects aimed at improving transit operations and customer service.

Review traffic impact studies associated with proposed developments, assess impacts on transit operations, and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.

Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) representing the Transportation Planning and Engineering team on cross-functional initiatives and major TTC projects.

Lead, coach, develop, and supervise Transportation Engineers and Technicians, including establishing annual goals and objectives related to safety, customer service, performance management, and attendance management.

Prepare technical correspondence, briefing materials, presentations, reports, and recommendations for senior management, including the Head, Transportation Planning and Engineering and Chief Transportation Engineer.

Attend public meetings, stakeholder consultations, and inter-agency meetings and deliver presentations as required.

Review technical studies, reports, and memoranda and provide expert analysis and advice to support strategic decision-making.

What Qualifications Do You Bring? Completion of a university degree in Civil Engineering, combined with several years of progressively responsible experience that has developed a thorough working knowledge of traffic engineering and transit operations; or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed to be equivalent. Extensive experience managing complex transportation, transit, traffic engineering, or infrastructure-related projects and studies. Demonstrated experience collaborating with municipal agencies, government partners, and multidisciplinary stakeholders on transportation initiatives. Strong leadership skills with experience supervising and developing professional and technical staff. Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or an equivalent professional designation with eligibility for licensure in Ontario. Strong written, verbal, presentation, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.
