ROLE

In this position, which reports to the President, you will be responsible for developing, implementing strategy, promoting and overseeing Polytechnique Montréal’s research, innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship activities. All of this enables the university to establish itself as a reference for sustainable progress and to strengthen its leadership position in fields in engineering and the applied sciences with high societal impact.

As a key partner of the executive team, you and your teams will lead all support and coordination activities in support of fundamental and applied research, innovation, entrepreneurship and development of the discoveries resulting from all these activities, with the aim of creating lasting alliances with academia, government and industry.

Additionally, your responsibilities will focus on expanding research activities aimed at training the graduate student community, achieving technological breakthroughs and scientific discoveries, and establishing partnerships. You will also be tasked with maintaining relations concerning research and innovation between Polytechnique and its governmental, institutional and industrial partners worldwide.

The following units report to this division:

  • The Direction associée innovation et impact, including the Bureau de la recherche et Centre de développement technologique (BRCDT), Bureau de la valorisation, Propolys, as well as institutes and centres such as IMC2 (Institut multidisciplinaire en cybersécurité et cyberrésilience), IET (Institut de l’énergie Trottier), Institut Lassonde pour les innovations de rupture and CITP (Centre d’innovation sur les technologies propres);
  • The Bureau des partenariats en recherche;
  • The Bureau de l’éthique et de l’intégrité en recherche.

In fulfilling your duties, you will need to demonstrate extensive knowledge of the national and international science and engineering ecosystem, strategic leadership and a keen understanding of how to support Polytechnique’s faculty, teams, research groups and graduate student research community. You are able to cultivate a collaborative and inclusive vision, and are dynamic and innovative. You have strong analytical and summarizing skills and are able to communicate, persuade and rally support.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the university’s senior administrators, department heads, faculty members and research staff;
  • Define and implement, together with their teams, the university’s vision and strategy for research, innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship, as well as their related objectives and action plans, and ensure accountability (references: Polytechnique Montréal’s Plan stratégique 2024-2028 (French only) and Plan de soutien à la recherche (French only);
  • Establish and recommend a clear vision and prioritization of high-impact areas to be supported in order to enable the university to reach its full potential;
  • Ensure, in close collaboration with the departments and the Coordinating Committee, funding through various mechanisms (grants, industrial or institutional partnerships, philanthropy, etc.), and the resources and support services necessary for the university’s research and innovation activities;
  • Recommend Polytechnique’s development policies and strategies in the areas of research and innovation, technology transfer and entrepreneurship, based on society’s current and anticipated needs;
  • Encourage and facilitate innovation, technology transfer and entrepreneurship at all levels at Polytechnique;
  • Work closely with the Philanthropy and Alumni Relations team to create an internal culture focused on building and fostering strong and lasting relationships with the alumni and philanthropic community;
  • Oversee the smooth operation of the institutes, centres and research groups led by Polytechnique or collaborate with those in which the university is a stakeholder;
  • Participate in the governance of the institutes under your responsibility, in particular the two APOGÉE institutes, TransMedTech and IVADO;
  • Develop and oversee the effective functioning of the research partnerships with industry, the community, governments and public and parapublic organizations;
  • Sit on the Board of Directors and Coordinating Committee and contribute your relevant expertise;
  • Participate in the work of the Senate and Board of Governors, advising members on all major policies and projects in the areas for which you are responsible;
  • Chair the Polytechnique Research Commission and serve as an active member of the Central Health and Safety Committee;
  • Develop and maintain strong collaboration and communication links with the various stakeholders in the ecosystem (e.g. universities, governments, businesses, public and semi-public organizations, government ministries, associations, etc.) necessary for the development of your directorate;
  • Maintain the close links with the Université de Montréal and HEC Montréal required to meet the obligations under the research affiliation contract;
  • Recommend the budget for your directorate and control expenditures within authorized limits;
  • Represent Polytechnique on external organizations in the areas covered by your directorate;
  • Encourage and oversee the development of managers under your responsibility in order for them to achieve their full potential; support and guide them and play an inspirational leadership role with colleagues and team members;
  • Ensure the institution’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations and standards in the areas of activity related to your responsibilities, particularly in matters of research integrity and ethics, as well as health and safety. Work with the General Secretariat to ensure compliance and risk management;
  • Manage all policies and directives relating to your areas of activity, and ensure that they are applied and kept up to date;
  • Maintain a strategic watch over your entire sector and perform any other tasks assigned by the General Directorate;
  • Keep your knowledge of your areas of activity up to date;
  • Report on your activities to the General Directorate and perform any other tasks it assigns.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • A doctorate (PhD) or master’s degree, combined with the required experience, in a related and relevant discipline.

Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in increasingly responsible management positions in functions within an engineering teaching and research environment and in technology development;
  • Solid experience in research, with in-depth knowledge of current trends and issues in various fields, particularly related to engineering and science;
  • Excellent knowledge of the national and international engineering and science education and research ecosystem;
  • A significant contribution to securing key funding for research or innovation projects.

  • Excellent ability to listen, communicate and be sensitive to the needs of teams, faculty, research groups and the graduate student research community;
  • Ability to quickly grasp organizational needs and positionings;
  • Understanding of research issues, trends and funding that influence the development of a Québec university, and ability to manage the financial resources allocated;
  • Ability to define coherent, cross-functional, results-focused strategies, and to establish, measure and work with performance indicators;
  • Ability to adapt to and integrate into the university culture and to work as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing and developing high-performance teams;
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills;

  • Excellent command of spoken and written French (Polytechnique’s working language is French).

COMPENSATION

In accordance with the terms of the compensation policy and employment conditions for executives adopted by the Board of Governors.

TERM AND START DATE

  • Full-time.
  • Four-year term with possibility of renewal.
