Job Summary

Under the direction of the Lead and Faculty Grant Officers, the Research Finance Assistant will assist the Faculty of Health (HLTH) in creating a strong research-intensive environment as part of the Faculty’s Research Support Team (RST).

The HLTH RST is the first point of contact for research services for HLTH researchers (e.g. faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, research grant employees, students) as well as to external university partners and the Office of Research Services, Research Accounting, Payroll, etc. The Research Finance Assistant will provide support in the coordination and delivery of research-oriented administrative and financial processes for the Faculty, including tasks related to preparing grant applications as well as post-award processes such as reimbursements, payments, and appointments.

Job Requirements

Experience:
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to 3 years of experience working within a comparable environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles including reconciliation, accounting transaction processing, financial report preparation, foreign currency conversion, and application of GST / PST / HST.
  • Experience and proficiency with general office procedures, processes, and equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time/tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to problem solve by using judgement, independent thinking and/or analysis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style for different audiences and situations.
  • Experience composing various business communications such as emails, memos, and reports.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
  • Experience in maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
  • Proficiency with computer applications (e.g. MS-Office Suite, Adobe Create Suite, financial systems, databases).
  • Knowledge of BANNER, FAST, Cascade and Connect/SharePoint is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with UVic programs, policies, procedures and the Office of Research Services, and Research Accounting is considered an asset.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:
Secondary school diploma or equivalent. Some post-secondary education/courses in finance or accounting would be an asset.
