About the role

Your Opportunity:

The Alberta Children's Hospital is a warm and vibrant workplace, with team members providing service to children and their families in inpatient units, ambulatory clinics, our Rehabilitation Day Program and Rotary Flames House. Responsible for ensuring the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. Completing assessment, treatment, education and provide clinical support and consultation. Collaboration and communication with the health care team and participation in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the patient and family. The Recreation Therapist will be working at the Rotary Flames House (RFH), the only free standing pediatric hospice in Alberta. Caring for children with life limiting conditions, between the ages of birth to 18 years and their families, this role will enhance the quality of life for these children, while at RFH. Working alongside the interdisciplinary team, and in particular with the Child Life therapist, school teachers, nursing team, Volunteer Coordinator and volunteers, this position will be integral to the care. As a Recreation Therapist, you will utilize knowledge of child development, the impact of hospitalization on children, pain management and coping techniques when interacting with patients. You will provide therapeutic play/recreation programs and adapted physical activities, coordinate special events for the children and families and provide one to one intervention as required. This position requires working every other weekend. Description:

As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients¿ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 3-5 years of experience working as a Recreation Therapist. Minimum 1 year working with pediatric palliative patients. Within the last year has worked clinically as a recreation therapist with medically complex, fragile children and youth with complex and life limiting medical conditions. Demonstrated skills in utilizing adapted physical activity as part of treatment plan. Experience planning and facilitating therapeutic group programs and special events. Demonstrated ability to teach and deliver education material to families in an engaging and meaningful way. Demonstrated ability to function independently and within an interdisciplinary team environment. Demonstrated understanding of a Family Centered Care service delivery model. Completion of a Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care Pallium (LEAP) course. Level C Basic Life Support (CPR).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with community partners providing services to special needs children. National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification is an asset. Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association membership. Valid Class 4 driver’s license. Volunteer training and supervision experience beneficial
