About the role
The Office of Indigenous Local Global Health in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Manager, Indigenous Health Office.
The Indigenous, Local, and Global Health (ILGH) Office is seeking an innovative and collaborative Manager, Indigenous Health Office with experience promoting and supporting Indigenous health programs and activities to address social and health inequities. The Manager, Indigenous Health Office networks and builds respectful, reciprocal relationships between the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Indigenous communities, fostering skills and attitudes among faculty, staff and students that promote respect, address health inequities, and value human difference. The Manager leads the Indigenous Office Team and supports students.
This position is based in Calgary at the Cumming School of Medicine, Health Sciences campus. The role involves in-person work of 5 days per week in the office. Occasional weekend and evening work is expected during busy period.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Indigenous Health within the Indigenous, Local and Global Health Office (ILGHO), the Manager, Indigenous Health Office, is a member of the Indigenous Health Program (IHP) leadership team focusing on support and implementation of the three strategic priorities of the Indigenous health programs, explores and builds partnerships with Indigenous communities and all relevant and interested UC units.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Program Management:
- Develops and implements project management policies, programs and systems to support program initiatives.
- Develop project work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and status reports on a regular basis.
- Develop and manage positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders and partners
- Ensure objectives and project milestones are achieved within the established timeline, budget and scope
- Collect data and assemble progress reports to provide regular updates to ILGH Leadership
- Coordinate, document, and oversee regular team meetings and monitor activities
- The incumbent will work with highly confidential financial information. In consultation with the ILGH Business Operations Manager, the Manager, IHO will prepare, revise and approve budgets and transactions related to Indigenous operations
- Develop annual progress reports and other outcomes report(s)
- Manage program constraints, providing oversight, accountability, review and high-level evaluation of activities. Advises the Indigenous Health Program leadership on strategies for implementation, coordination and integration
Staff Management Responsibilities:
- Coordinate support for Indigenous Health programs and initiatives, communicating with ILGH managers to secure program support from ILGH staff with other primary assignments. Proactively determine staffing needs, resolving conflicts for program deliverables and priorities
- Supervise and coordinates daily activities of IHO staff. Provides clear direction in response to changing dynamics, considering different options and associated risk
- Responsible for resolving highly confidential human resources matters including conflict/personal issues with team members, contract/salary matters, and approvals
- Proactively determines staffing needs including the creation of job profiles and hiring, mentoring and annual performance reviews
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Masters or Bachelors degree in a related field: project management, and/or health related experience
- 5-7 years management experience in development and project management preferably in an academic setting. Additional years of experience is considered an asset
- Preference for a candidate with relevant experience working in Indigenous communities
- A resourceful self-starter who possesses sound judgment, versatility and creativity, and basic quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and planning and organization skills; previous experience with Results-based Management
- Strong preference for knowledge of university/academic institution policies, regulations, and procedures
- Experience managing a project team and knowledge of human resources processes including recruitment, retention, coaching and performance management
- Relevant financial experience, including oversight of project budgets
- Prior experience working in cross-cultural settings including work in capacity-building (i.e. senior trainer/mentor)
- Experience managing in a unionized environment
