THE OPPORTUNITY: MULTI-CULTURAL LIASON SUPPORT WITH VIETNAMESE FLUENCY (SCHOOL & STUDENT SUPPORT B) Position Type: Part-Time (.50 FTE) In this position, you will:
- Assist students from Vietnamese speaking ethnic communities to understand and derive the maximum benefit from the school system and to help parents and custodians understand the school system, their responsibilities and how to participate in the education of their students
- Assist school and district staff with the educational and social development of students, including interviewing students and relaying information and judgment of the student’s responses
- Provide interpretation in one to one and group meetings, public meetings and public inquiries by telephone or in person, and other situations as required
- Act as a liaison amongst district staff, school counselors, teachers, administrators, students, local custodians, and parents in the country of origin
- Provide translation and interpretation service between school staff and students/families in English and Vietnamese language
- Provide professional development around cultural competency to other district staff
- Perform school & student support duties to support the schools and District
- Perform other work within the job band as assigned
Qualifications
- Completion of grade 12 plus 2 years of full time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a diploma in any of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education
- Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience
- Must possess extensive knowledge of the problems involved in cultural adaptation in an educational setting
- Sound knowledge of school and community resources available to International students, and working knowledge of general policies, curriculum and operation of public school districts in BC
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, such as staff, students and families
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
- Must be willing to travel throughout the district
- Fluency in Vietnamese required (verbal and written)
Compensation The salary for the Multi-Cultural Liaison Support with Vietnamese Fluency position is $38.05/hour (paid as 7 hours/day) plus a comprehensive benefits package, including Municipal Pension Plan, Vancouver Employee Savings Plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, Vacation, & Gratuity Days. Working months are September to June each year. This position is in-person supporting multiple VSB schools.
