The Role The Senior Counsel provides strategic, practical legal guidance to support MEC’s legal and business operations. Reporting to the General Counsel, the role operates with a high degree of independence and partners with teams across the organization to manage legal risk while enabling business objectives. The role supports a wide range of matters, including labour and employment, commercial agreements, privacy, and operational initiatives across Canada. Success requires sound judgment, strong business acumen, and the ability to deliver practical solutions in a fast-paced retail environment.

Location: This a hybrid role base out of MEC's Support Office in Vancouver.

As The Senior Counsel, You'll

  • Deliver strong legal services to accomplish organization goals, strategies and priorities and support MEC activities across Canada.
  • Be engaged in a variety of transactions and legal matters, including contract negotiations and drafting.
  • Provide direct advice to the People team on labour and employment issues, and represent MEC in employment matters and labour negotiations.
  • Provide advice on real estate, information technology (IT) procurement, marketing and privacy matters.
  • Continuously advance legal and business practices by driving new approaches and process improvements while balancing a high volume of matters in a timely and effective manner.

What You Bring

  • Overall broad legal knowledge, with specific knowledge of labour and employment law
  • Proven legal experience in business environment
  • Strong analytical skills that help to resolve client and legal concerns practically and efficiently
  • Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity
  • First class interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks and to “see around the corner”
  • Called or more years ago to the Bar
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia, Alberta or Ontario.

It’s a bonus if you have…

  • Ability to speak and understand French.

The Compensation & Parks! This is a 12-month fixed term maternity leave cover with the anticipated salary range of $140,000 to $180,000 base . The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications and internal equity.
