Job Summary

The Team The Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services team is an established group committed to providing essential mental health services to young people involved in the justice system. This multi-disciplinary team works closely with probation services, community agencies and contracted service providers, as well as Youth Custody Services staff to deliver Court-ordered assessments. The Role In this Psychiatric Nurse role, you will conduct nursing assessments, provide direct care, and supervise youth in a secure forensic psychiatric unit. You will support daily activities, nutrition, and hygiene while participating in psychiatric treatment and crisis intervention. By ensuring the safety of residents, staff, and visitors, you will significantly impact the well-being of detained youth needing specialized care. This position offers the chance to provide crucial mental health services to youth experiencing behavioral issues, addictions, and mental health challenges, making it an exciting and rewarding opportunity for candidates passionate about making a difference.

Qualifications: Education and Experience Requirements

  • Registered or eligible for registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) with a designation of either Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse. -**NOTE:**As a condition of employment, must have current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification. -**NOTE:**As a condition of employment, must Provide First Aid coverage and medical support for staff, as required under WorkSafe BC guidelines.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • One (1) year experience working in residential youth care, security, mental health or forensic psychiatric related work; OR an equivalent combination of related experience, related education and/or related training may be considered.
  • Crisis Intervention and Physical Restraint (CIPR) training; OR an equivalent combination of related experience, related education and/or related training may be considered.

Willingness Statements:

  • Shift work is a requirement as this is a 24-hour facility. Must be able to work days/ evenings/ midnights/ weekends.
  • Will be required to work around youth who are distressed and facing challenges which may occasionally involve exposure to unpleasant situations or behaviour with angry, abusive, or abused clients; exposure to hazards from frequently working around youth in crisis who may display volatile behaviour.

About this Position: Currently there are two (2) permanent full-time positions.
These positions have full time on-site requirements.
*Bargaining for the collective agreement that covers this position may impact the starting salary, if applicable, upon the conclusion of the upcoming round of collective bargaining between the Employer and BCNU.* The employer is willing to pay a starting salary at the top end of the salary range depending on qualifications and years of experience and in accordance with the employer policies.
An eligibility list may be established for future permanent and temporary opportunities.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) will be required.
