About Mamu Tshishkutamashutau - Innu Education

Located in Labrador, Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) is dedicated to supporting the educational journey of the Innu Nation. With two schools in Natuashish and Sheshatshiu, MTIE serves approximately 1,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, fostering a culturally grounded and student-centered learning environment.

About The Position

The Positive Action for Student Success (PASS) Teacher supports students in overcoming barriers to learning by promoting regular attendance, positive engagement, and academic success. Working collaboratively with school leadership, classroom teachers, families, and community partners, the PASS Teacher provides targeted interventions, individualized support, and culturally responsive programming to help students remain connected to school.

This position plays a critical role in improving student attendance, strengthening relationships, and fostering a safe and supportive learning environment that reflects and respects Innu culture, values, and community priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Monitor and support student attendance and engagement through proactive intervention strategies and relationship-building initiatives. Provide individualized academic, behavioural, social, and emotional support to students experiencing barriers to success. Collaborate with school staff, families, and community partners to coordinate student supports and intervention planning. Promote culturally responsive practices and community engagement that reflect Innu culture, traditions, and values. Support positive student behaviour, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and overall student well-being.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

Bachelor of Education from a recognized post-secondary institution. Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Teaching Certificate (or confirmed eligibility to obtain one prior to start date).

Mandatory Requirements

Legal entitlement to work in Canada. Clear Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) (must be current within the last 6 months).

Experience

Experience supporting students with diverse learning, behavioural, and social-emotional needs, including the use of differentiated and responsive instructional strategies Experience working in northern, rural, or Indigenous communities is considered a strong asset

Knowledge And Skills

Strong understanding of student engagement, attendance intervention strategies, and trauma-informed practices Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills Ability to work collaboratively with staff, families, and community partners Strong organizational and documentation skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment Demonstrated cultural competence and awareness of Innu culture and community dynamics; fluency in Innu-Aimun is considered an asset

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed in a classroom environment, though land-based learning initiatives will require periods of outdoor instruction Requires standing, walking, and engaging with active children for extended periods May require supervision duties outside of regular classroom hours (e.g., recess, lunch, or bus duty)

Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) proudly serves the Innu Nation in Labrador. There are two Innu schools in the communities Sheshatshiu and Natuaushish. MTIE Innu schools provide access to education that honours Innu language, traditions, and culture.

Our logo depicts a MITSHIKUN. This is a traditional Innu tool used to clean hides. The mitshikun represents the strength, resourcefulness, determination and practicality of the Innu people.

In 2009, Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) was founded to have jurisdiction over the education of Innu in Labrador in order to create First Nations schools and curriculums that honour and celebrate Innu culture, Innu traditions, and Innu-aimun (language).

MTIE is governed by a board of trustees that is selected by the Chiefs and Councils of the Mushuau Innu in Natuashish and the Sheshatshiu Innu. The board of trustees and the administration of MTIE serve two schools, the Mushuau Innu Natuashish School, and the Sheshatshiu Innu School.
