PLANNER 1 - DEVELOPMENT POSITION OVERVIEW: The City of Maple Ridge has an exciting opportunity for a Planner 1 position. This position applies specialized planning knowledge in the interpretation of plans, policies and bylaws to the review of development applications within urban and rural environments.

Work involves reviewing a range of development applications including subdivisions, multi-family and other moderately complex developments; and making recommendations on the amendment of bylaws and other types of applications for such developments.

While work assignments and objectives are set forth by management staff, the Planner 1 is expected to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out their work.

Required Education And Experience University graduation in an appropriate discipline, plus a post graduate degree in Community or Regional Planning or other related areas, supplemented by some professional planning experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Considerable knowledge of the practices, principles, techniques and methods applicable to urban planning operations.

Considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, by-law objectives and legislation governing the operations of the Planning Department.

Sound knowledge of analytical and research techniques and methodology and of the current trends and developments in municipal planning

Sound knowledge of economics, Corporation finances and sociology applicable to municipal planning.

Ability to perform planning research and analytical tasks, and to apply statistical techniques.

Ability to prepare reports and recommendations on a variety of planning projects, programs and policies, to communicate effectively and to explain technical concepts and plans to non-technical people.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, professionals, internal and external customers and authorities.

Ability to present reports to senior staff and Council, if requested to do so.

Ability to exercise consistent judgment and creativity in dealing with a variety of planning matters.

Ability to supervise staff assigned to work on various projects.

Ability to perform tasks under general supervision.

Working knowledge of MS Office and other relevant programs. REQUIRED LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia. The City of Maple Ridge is located on the traditional territory of the Kwantlen and Katzie First Nations north of the Fraser River between the Pitt River and Stave Falls in the shadow of the Golden Ears Mountain.
