About the role

Position Summary

The Unit Worker provides support to the Emergency Department (ED) by performing non-professional/non-nursing tasks in alignment with the departmental goals and objectives as well as the organizations’ strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transports or assists in transporting patients for the ED.

  • Transports patients to and from the ED to Inpatient Units and various departments as assigned.

  • Assists with moving patients from stretcher to patient bed.

  • Transports equipment throughout the hospital as required.

  • Contributes to the provision of a clean and safe environment.

  • Tidies patient areas as appropriate.

  • Maintain cleanliness of floors throughout the ED.

  • Ensures patient care equipment and specialty cleaning is performed as required according to current policies and procedures.

  • Strips and remakes beds/stretchers including discharge beds as required, changes linen bags as required.

  • Conducts cleaning in-between patients.

  • Performs terminal cleaning for all isolation cases.

  • Washes equipment and instruments as required; sends or delivers equipment for cleaning as required.

  • Performs regular cleaning in all washrooms throughout ED; all washrooms must be disinfected with appropriate cleaner two times per shift.

  • Assists in ensuring that equipment and supplies are available when needed.

  • Retrieves and returns unit equipment.

  • Restocks and orders linen and supplies as necessary.

  • Distributes linen to patient areas throughout the ED.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned, such as, but not limited to:

  • Performs messenger services as required.

  • Ensuring confidentiality of patient, team member, and hospital information as maintained at all times.

  • Observes Hospital and Departmental Rules, Regulations, Policies/Procedures and current legislation and safety procedures.

  • Participates in and complies with hospital safety and infection control programs.

  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Manager of the ED or Delegate.

Qualifications

Education

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent is required.

Experience

  • A minimum of one (1) year Hospital Janitorial/Housekeeping experience is preferred.

Skills and Traits

  • Must be able to meet the physical and emotional responsibilities of the role, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent and repetitive pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as safely operating equipment.

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, as outlined in the Physical Demands Analysis (PDA).

  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Provides excellent customer service and contributes positively to teamwork and collaborative working relationships.

  • Effectively prioritizes workload, adapts to changing priorities, and remains composed in fast-paced or stressful environments.

  • Works independently with sound judgment, while remaining flexible to meet departmental and organizational needs.
