Job Summary

The Vision of the BC Brain Wellness Program is Brain Wellness, Beyond All Boundaries.

We are leveraging the collective power of clinical care, lifestyle programs, education, and research to design a comprehensive and integrated approach to brain wellness for people with chronic brain conditions, care partners and healthy agers.

The BC Brain Wellness Program (BCBWP) is an interactive effort to establish clinically relevant lifestyle approaches to complement medical treatment in the clinics at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for

Brain Health (DMCBH). By combining clinical care with interventions that support healthier lifestyles, the BC Brain Wellness Program team hopes to improve and sustain quality of life for people living with brain disorders and their care partners, as well as to offer healthy agers the opportunity to enhance their wellness and engage in preventative lifestyle measures.

The BC Brain Wellness Program brings together the DMCBH, the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Clinic at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Coastal Health. Expertise is drawn from many fields including the School of Music, Physiotherapy, Kinesiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosciences, Nutrition as well as several community partners.

The Physiotherapist role would include the assessment of clients referred to the BCBWP. Assessment includes physical function, balance, motor symptoms and awareness of the impact of non-motor symptoms on clients’ functional abilities. The Physiotherapist will support clients in accessing appropriate interventions that can mitigate disease progression, improve quality of life and improve function in everyday living. The clinical work may take place on campus (DMCBH, UBC Sports Med research gym, Osborne Gym) or off-site satellite project sites. The Physiotherapist would be involved in the mentoring and supervision of students. Understanding of team-based care and the importance of client centred care is important. The candidate must demonstrate a strong desire and focus to provide an optimal clinical experience for the client. Oversight of the intake process and striation of clients into various group programs will be another key component of this role. Evidence informed practice and staying up to date with current evidence around the role of lifestyle-based approaches and their impact on brain health is key component of this role. Maintaining and keeping detailed records in the program electronic medical records is critical.

Organizational Status
The BCBWP is seeking a part-time (0.4FTE) Physiotherapist to join the team. The individual will work closely with the Program Director, Program Manager, and the multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and research staff at the DMCBH to contribute to our current programs. They will report to Program Director.

Work Performed

  • The assessment and treatment of clients referred to the BCBWP including assessing clients’ abilities, establishing treatment goals based on diagnoses, and implementation of physiotherapy or exercise-based interventions and treatments.
  • Act in a professional manner at all times, ensuring clients-centered care.
  • Communicate with referring physicians and other health care professionals regarding clients’ needs, as indicated.
  • Oversee all group exercise programs into which clients are referred to ensure they are in the appropriate group and that specific goals are being achieved.
  • Collaborating in relevant quality improvement and clinical research initiatives.
  • Ensuring the provision of evidence informed high-quality care to clients.
  • Oversite and supervision of the intake process for the BCBWP.
  • Ensure that virtual assessments are conducted appropriately and safely.
  • Training and supervision of staff conducting the assessments.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed chart notes in the clinic EMR (Jane).
  • Other related tasks as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Poor decisions/errors in judgment may compromise the BCBWP, breech the trust and confidentiality of research participants, and may result in financial loss to the PI, the Centres, and the University. Even simple typographical mistakes may result in distress to stakeholders and be damaging to the program and the reputation of the team and Director. They may influence the ability of the PI to meet critical deadlines and affect funding applications and ongoing program obligations.

Supervision Received
This role will be supervised by the Director of the BCBWP. However, they will not be on-site in the clinic when the candidate is working. Thus, the candidate must be fully competent and independent in their abilities to assess and treat patients.

Supervision Given

The individual will supervise Kinesiologists and Exercise Physiologists employed by the BCBWP as well as the volunteers working in the BCBWP in a patient facing capacity. The individual will supervise and mentor students working in the clinic and virtually, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and professional standards. The individual will provide guidance, feedback, and support to enhance student learning and development in a clinical setting.
