Registered Practical Nurse (Regular Full-Time 1.0 FTE)

The Position
The Registered Practical Nurse provides holistic, family-centred care to infants, children, and adolescents and their families who are receiving habilitation, rehabilitation and complex continuing care services, incorporating standards of practice as stated by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act.
The Inpatient Rehab & Complex Continuing Care department operates on a 24-hour basis. As such, there is a requirement for availability to work a variety of shifts including daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, and holidays.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Bases practice on basic nursing science and basic content relevant to nursing from the sciences and humanities
- Delivers care based on established policies and procedures
- Provides nursing care that promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well being of clients and families
- Provides direct nursing care to clients/families with predictable outcomes
- In complex care situations, consults with the registered nurse and interdisciplinary care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care provided, documenting the nursing process according to hospital policy
- Provides care in collaboration with the client and family, and communicates with members of the interdisciplinary care team and community providers as appropriate
- Advocates on behalf of the client/family to support quality outcomes of care
- Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care
- Participates in risk management activities to ensure the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment
- Uses a strength based approach to provide care
Education
- With the assistance and support of the Registered Nurse, provides education, both formal and informal, to clients and families, colleagues
Research
- Provides care based upon evidenced-based practice
Professional Development
- Demonstrates accountability for own nursing practice by adhering to established professional practice standards
- Supports the development of professional nursing practice through participation in unit and organizational committees
- Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous development of self by identifying learning needs and establishing annual goals and objectives
- Maintains own knowledge, skills, and abilities through education and training both in-house and in post-secondary institutions
- Manages change in a constructive and appropriate manner
- In partnership with clients/families and the interdisciplinary team, provides client and family-centred care which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
- Supports and respects the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
- Bases practice on established policies and procedures
- Interacts with members of the interdisciplinary team and community providers to ensure an integrated approach to service
- Promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well being of clients and families
- Collaborates with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care
- Communicates in a timely and effective manner
- Participates in quality improvement activities and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment for staff, clients and families
Qualifications
Education
- Registered Practical Nurse Certificate with medication administration.
- Pediatric nursing experience preferred.
Special Skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary care team.
Certification/Licenses
- Current Certificate of Competence by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Membership in the RPNAO preferred
- Current BCLS Certificate - Basic Rescuer (C)
