About the Role
We are seeking a forward-looking Technical Director to lead the Long-Range Technology group within the Battlefield Foundational Technology team. This role is dedicated to ensuring that Battlefield’s technology strategy focuses not just on the next release but is also exploring, proposing, and proving solutions to meet our long-term product challenges and opportunities through research, validation, and development of technology that is tightly aligned with Battlefield’s franchise direction.
As Technical Director, you will work across Battlefield to bring together cross-domain talent (e.g., engine, online, systems, infrastructure) to develop solutions to challenges such as cinematics, animation, UGX, architectural and workflow challenges, and areas of investment for AI & ML. While you will have a team of talented engineers within your organization, you will need to work across multiple domain leaders to unite domains towards solving Battlefield wide challenges. You will work with product technical leadership as well as domain technical leadership in matrix collaboration to build an aligned product and technology roadmap. Further, you will work closely with the Battlefield Head of Technology to define direction for the franchise directly.
Key Responsibilities
- Vision & Alignment
- Partner with Battlefield product and technology leadership to understand the long-term franchise vision and translate it into a defined, forward-looking technology strategy.
- Operate with senior technical directors, across various technology domains, to define multi-domain roadmaps to common challenges, ensuring our work is grounded in long-term product needs.
- Present current and potential long-term technology investments to product and technology leadership in franchise context to validate, and potentially grow, investment.
- Technical Leadership
- Lead and guide a team of ~10 engineers directly in Long Range Technology, driving exploration and prototyping against Battlefield franchise challenges and opportunities, with the goal of bringing solutions to product.
- Work with senior technical directors, who own various technical disciplines, to validate their technical planning and delivery against long-term product direction.
- Ensure solutions are pragmatic, scalable, and able to integrate seamlessly into Battlefield’s production timelines.
- Matrix Collaboration
- Partner closely with senior technical directors for Engine, Online, Stability & Infrastructure, and Tools & Workflows, in addition to product teams.
- Influence roadmap decisions through evidence-based insights, prototypes, and applied research.
- Shepherd technology investments so they provide value both immediately and over the long term.
- Execution & Delivery
- Prioritize and drive long-term R&D initiatives that prepare Battlefield for future releases and evolving industry demands.
- Deliver high-quality technical solutions, frameworks, and proofs of concept that can be adopted by product teams.
- Stay informed on emerging trends in FPS game development and translate them into actionable strategies for the franchise.
Qualifications
- Experience
- 10+ years in game development or related fields, with expertise in one or more areas such as rendering, networking, infrastructure, or systems.
- Proven success leading engineering teams in AAA game development or similarly complex technical environments.
- Strong background in defining and executing technology roadmaps with long-term franchise-level impact.
- Skills
- Excellent leadership of engineers across multiple technical disciplines.
- Ability to influence and collaborate in a matrix organization, working alongside peers who own domain-specific backlogs.
- Strategic problem-solving, with a balance of innovation and pragmatism.
- Deep understanding of FPS technology challenges (real-time rendering, large-scale networking, systems performance, etc.).
- Bonus
- Experience with machine learning applications in gaming.
- Background in delivering large-scale multiplayer titles.
- Familiarity with the Battlefield franchise or other large-scale FPS games.
