We’re seeking a Controller who sees beyond the books and someone eager to roll up their sleeves, optimize our accounting structure, and contribute directly to the company’s growth. You’ll partner closely with the founders as a trusted strategic advisor, offering both financial insights and an entrepreneurial mindset to help guide key decisions.

Job Duties

Review and prepare financial reports, including Balance Sheet schedules, Profit & Loss (P&L) statements, cash flow projections, and other regular reports tailored to beverage manufacturing and distribution Monitor and improve efficiencies and effectiveness of accounting controls, processes, and systems to support rapid growth in a startup setting Prepare GL account reconciliations, allocations for costs related to production, inventory, and sales Analyze operational costs (e.g., ingredients, packaging, logistics) and make recommendations for changes, cost savings, and optimization in the food and beverage supply chain Prepare GL entries and supporting schedules/working papers, including complex transactions such as inventory valuation for perishable goods and revenue recognition from e-commerce and retail channels Manage accounting software, including setup for new product lines, vendor accounts, and fiscal periods, as well as completing month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes Prepare quarterly financial reporting packages for investors, lenders, and stakeholders Prepare working papers for year-end and collaborate with external accountants Oversee and coordinate the timing of period, quarter, and year-end reporting across the company Support planning and financial integration for growth initiatives, such as new market expansions, product launches, or potential acquisitions Handle budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to align with business goals in the competitive functional beverage sector Assist with tax compliance, including HST/GST filings and CRA requirements specific to Canadian food and beverage operations Provide strategic financial insights to the CEO/COO on profitability, pricing strategies, and funding opportunities Manage accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), invoicing, and receivables to ensure timely payments, collections, and cash flow management Other duties and projects as assigned by the CEO/COO Requirements and Competencies: CPA designation Minimum 5 years experience in an intermediate or senior finance position, ideally in the food and beverage industry Solid knowledge of accounting principles, with experience in manufacturing or consumer goods preferred Excellent communication skills for collaborating with a small executive team and external partners Strong problem-solving abilities, with an ability to think outside the box in a fast-paced startup environment Advanced proficiency in spreadsheets (e.g., Excel) and accounting software Familiarity with inventory management, cost accounting, and supply chain finance in perishable products Ability to work independently in a remote setting, with strong organizational and time-management skills Key Deadlines: Monthly and Quarterly financial packages are due to lenders and investors based on agreed timelines Year-end financial statements are due to lenders and shareholders Compliance reporting to relevant government authorities
