Job Summary: Security guards patrol The CORE and provide a highly visible presence, to all tower and mall employees, tenants and patrons alike. Based upon a thorough understanding of the site SOP, guards provide protection to the public and deal with all operational and emergency situations as they arise in a professional and courteous manner.
Note the site encompasses 3.8 million square feet of commercial property including four commercial high[1]rise towers, 600,000 square feet, four level retail, three below grade parkades and Devonian Gardens, an in-door City of Calgary Park. There is an extensive food court on the 4th level.
The site is bordered by 7th & 8th Ave SW, and 2nd Street to 4th Street. There are two c-train platforms on 7th Avenue. The building is connected by multiple +15s, +30s and one +45 bridge to properties on all four sides. The site receives over 25 million guests a year. Several thousand Calgarians work at The CORE daily.
Patrol
- Provide a visible, professional presence throughout the property.
- Upon opening the mall, mall patrols commence in both upper and lower areas. Otherwise
- patrol towers after hours.
- Ensure all stores are open for business.
- Check fire panels and ensure all is in order and there are no trouble signals
- Escort mall guests of property when not following site rules.
- Respond promptly to all employees, tenants, or patron inquiries. If for some reason the
- inquiry is not a security related issue, kindly direct them to the proper department.
- Patrol all internal and external areas, including all parking, perimeter and roof areas. Check
- all road signs and conditions of roads or any other areas requiring maintenance.
- Check all areas of the mall for spills or other unsafe conditions. (barricade areas until
- maintenance arrives). Check and ensure all service areas are free of garbage and debris.
- Conduct escorts for retailers and management upon request.
- Ensure that only authorized people are utilizing areas. Challenge anyone who does not
- appear authorized.
Emergency Response:
- Assist in evacuations and provide support during crisis situations.
- Know all policies and procedures as they apply to the fire plan and specifically the security
- department’s role.
- Be fully trained in the proper use of fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment.
- Fully trained in First aid and C.P.R. (proof of certification required).
- Respond promptly to alarms, disturbances, and emergencies, such as fires, medical
- incidents, or security breaches either upon direct observation or directed by control centre.
Report Writing / Documentation:
- Maintain security officer notebook for day-to-day reporting.
- Write detailed incident reports as needed.
- Maintain accurate logs and reports of incidents, inspections, and any irregularities observed
- during shifts.
- Complete daily activity reports and incident reports as required.
- Issue trespass notices to all people who are to be barred from the CORE.
Customer Service:
- Interact professionally with employees, visitors, and contractors while maintaining
- an elevated level of confidentiality and discretion.
- Aid and direct staff or guests as needed.
- Be familiar with all CW employees at the CORE, including management personnel.
- Develop and maintain excellent police relations.
Compliance and Enforcement:
- Ensure adherence to security protocols and local regulations.
- Enforce policies, rules, and regulations of the facility or organization in a calm and respectful
- manner.
- Be totally familiar with all Cushman & Wakefield Management Security Policies and
- Procedures.
- Be fully versed with the Trespass to Property Act R.S.O. 1980 and how to utilize it.
- Be fully versed in use of force and conflict de-escalation and be prepared to conduct arrests
- with unauthorized visitors.
- Be familiar with other sections of the Laws, By-Laws and Acts governing and related to the
- property and the protection thereof, and all related Canadian Criminal Code sections relevant
- to the protection and policing of the property.
- Perform other tasks as may be required.

tasks but to be successful must possess Tiers 1, 2 and 3 core competencies.
- Strong observational and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure or in emergency situations.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic knowledge of security systems and protocols.
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform patrol duties and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
There are several posts and titles within the security guard role which include:
Sierra, Tango, & Bravo Guards including Team Leads & 2IC.
- Complete daily audits as required.
- Patrol all floors of the mall, including exterior and parkade and stairwells.
- Respond to Control Center reports of 10-41 sightings and behaviors.
- Assist tenants, contractors, and guests upon request.
Sierra guards are the highest trained officer at the CORE. They have been onsite for a minimum of six
months, have obtained all training and have passed their Guard Training Exam.
Tango guards have been onsite from one to six months. They have not passed the Guard Training Exam.
Bravo guards are part time.
Retail Guard
- This is a primarily a relationship building and networking position within the retail area to foster communication and a sense of safety and security with our retail tenants.
- Patrol the mall area and visit each retail tenant daily / weekly (where appropriate).
- Check in with an employee or manager to see how things are going.
- Report any concerns or issues to the Control Center.
- Maintain a record of tenant interactions to brief management.
- Respond to 10-41 sightings and behaviors observed or reported by Control Center.
Lima Guards
- Patrol assigned area designated by Team Lead or Cushwake Supervisor.
- Observe and report any 10-41 behaviors (e.g., sleeping, loitering, panhandling).
- Assist Sierra, Tango, or Bravo Guards with removals of people from property.
- Assist Sierra, Tanga & Bravo guards with inspections.
Food Court Guard
- Patrol assigned area to provide a security presence.
- Observe, report, and respond to any 10-41 behaviors (e.g., sleeping, loitering, panhandling).
- Make a record of tenant and customer interactions of interest to management.
Other positions
- Trainer: full time, dedicated position to train guards to complete their tasks with confidence.
- Information Desk: information kiosk on the second floor. Informs management when tenants are
- not open.
- Admin support in the security office – security systems supporting management.
- Front desk control – assist supervisors and controllers in the security control centre.
