The salary range for this position is CAD $41.05/Hr. - CAD $51.26/Hr.

Reporting to the Manager, Medical Imaging, the Nuclear Medicine (NM) Site Radiation Safety Officer (SRSO) / Clinical Educator/Instructor works in a team-based environment and is responsible for administering and maintaining the NM radiation protection program at Providence Health Care, clinical education and clinical instruction for NM and the interdisciplinary team including Nuclear Medicine and other professions.

The SRSO will ensure that all activities involving radiation sources such as ionizing substances, and radiation emitting devices, are conducted in accordance with applicable policies and procedures that comply with federal and provincial regulations. Ensures the NM department is compliant with all Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Acts and Regulations as well as applicable Provincial and Federal regulations related to nuclear safety (e.g. WorkSafe BC, Transport Canada). Liaises with regulatory agencies and maintains the diagnostic, therapeutic and processing licenses for the department and leads the CNSC license and annual compliance report submissions. This includes monitoring and auditing compliance with regulations for licensing, the inspection of radiation equipment, and the investigation of radiation related incidents. The SRSO conducts internal audits of practice, promotes a culture of radiation safety and leads the development of safe practices on radiation safety matters.

The position is also responsible and accountable for the development, planning and delivery of clinical/technical and radiation safety education programs for NM and affiliated staff, and administration of the student training program for the profession through the identification of educational needs, development and provision of educational content, and accountability for learning outcomes.

Education Successful completion of a recognized Nuclear Medicine program. Successful completion of the CAMRT certification exam in Nuclear Medicine. Eligible for certification with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) in Nuclear Medicine. Three (3) years' recent, related clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine including completion of a professional instructional program and recent experience creating educational materials, implementing education strategies, utilizing knowledge translation abilities and experience mentoring staff and/or students, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Completion of a Radiation Safety Officer course from a recognized program applicable for the use of radioactive materials under CNSC regulations. Completion or eligibility for applicable professional designation (e.g., CRPA �).

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification - Basic Life Support (BCLS) level.

Your Day to Day

• Accountable for the administration of the Nuclear Medicine quality control program including establishing appropriate documentation, audits, controls, and validation methods. Performs quality control.
• Develops, implements, and monitors radiation safety practices and policies for PHC, to fulfill all accreditation standards related to radiation exposure and safety.
• Acts as the CNSC Signing Authority and CNSC License Contact Person for PHC licenses. Ensures departmental radiation safety compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory requirements including WorkSafe BC, Transport Canada and CNSC. Ensures CNSC license compliance regarding the use of radioactive materials are met and other relevant legislation are followed (e.g. Transport Canada and WorkSafe BC regulations).
• Ensures that diagnostic, therapeutic and processing licenses and permits are current for the Nuclear Medicine Department. Works to prepare license renewal applications to CNSC in accordance with conditions contained in relevant licenses. Prepares annual compliance reports (ACRs) for CNSC in accordance with conditions contained in relevant licenses and submits final ACRs to CNSC.
• Intervenes if the use of radioactive material poses a direct risk to safety or security and in breach to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Regulations. Works with the dept. supervisor and/or applicant authority to expedite the implementation of corrective actions. Actively contributes to the NM RSC as a member and adviser on radiation safety matters and responsible for the development, maintenance and annual review of the NM RSC Terms of Reference.
• Supports the development and maintenance of the NM Radiation Safety Manual and NM Emergency Response Manual, in collaboration with the NM RSC and Workplace Health and ensures changes to the manuals are communicated to the CNSC. Liaises with CNSC, applicant Authority, NM RSC, Provincial Medical Imaging Office (PMIO) NM Physicist, and frontline staff on issues related to radiation safety and organizational compliance with policies and procedures in the Radiation Safety Program.
• Conducts annual NM site radiation safety audits. Observes and records work practices in relation to radiation safety, documents audit results including recommended remedial measures and conducts follow-up audits if required. Ensures appropriate measures are in place to respond to emergencies and unplanned events involving radioactive materials. Summarizes and regularly reports inspection results to the NM RSC and the applicant authority.

Clinical Educator Duties

• Works under the direction of the Manager, Site Coordinator and/or Supervisor to identify and establish the educational priorities for the department and ensures that the education priorities related to service delivery and access and flow of the designated program area are met.
• Provides modality-specific interprofessional orientation for the site, schedule and programs including review of relevant practice resources, standard operating procedures, available equipment, quality control, quality assurance and workflows. Ensures staff complete relevant site-specific and regional education materials and modules during their qualifying period.
• Accountable for the development, implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of learning outcomes of the Nuclear Medicine dept. Identifies learning needs, develops, and facilitate course content and holds accountability for the assessment and effectiveness of staff education, orientation and training programs.
• Acts as a clinical, technical, and educational resource using advanced theory and knowledge of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Safety. Evaluates and provides formal feedback related to the clinical and/or technical competency of other staff.

Clinical Instructor Duties

• Coordinates student clinical instruction within Medical Imaging by assigning student rotations through the various areas, determining the goals and objectives within each rotation, developing checklists for clinical instruction and liaising with designated staff to discuss instruction requirements/schedules to ensure proper exposure to all clinical activities in accordance with the requirements of the clinical experience portion of the Radiological Technology Program and Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologist’s (CAMRT) clinical competency profile. Prepares, maintains and updates rotation schedule, as required.
• Develops, delivers evaluates and revises education sessions and workshops to technologists focused on effective teaching strategies, clinical instruction and student supervision. Provides resources, guidelines and supporting materials to enhance the technologist’s skills when working with students. Responsible and accountable for the student training and learning outcomes when arranging staff instruction of students.
• Educates technologists on student assessment tools, evaluation methods and how do deliver constructive and supportive feedback that promotes student growth and development. Assists staff to navigate difficult conversations with students related to performance issues or concerns. Ensures technologists are familiar with evaluation tools to assess student competencies and offer assistant in interpreting and applying evaluation criteria in the clinical setting. Offer ongoing support to technologists working with students.
• Evaluates student progress and/or supports technologists to evaluate student progress and provide students with feedback during clinical practicum by implementing an evaluation system, setting up evaluation criteria for specified tasks, determining successful completion of tasks and providing feedback to ensure training goals and objectives are met.
• Liaises with educational institutions, the CAMRT, the Diagnostic Accreditation Program and other external organizations regarding curriculum, learning objectives and professional practice for Nuclear Medicine.
