Position Description
Research Technologist I
The successful applicant will be responsible for management and day-to-day operations of a comprehensive biobank that will support world-class clinical and translational research in the department of Cell and Systems Biology at The Hospital for Sick Children. The successful applicant will also be responsible for applying technical knowledge and skills to perform basic laboratory procedures and experiments including animal work. Projects will involve genetics, molecular biology, bacteriology, immunology, cell biology and protein work. He/she will also be expected to provide technical assistance to other lab members and participate in other lab duties.
Here's What You'll Get To Do:
- All aspect of analytical sample handling including receiving, processing, archiving and retrieval of human biological samples.
- Ensure biobank databases and biological samples inventories are up to date
- Assist with biobank database queries and sample/information transfer requests
- Handle and process DNA, RNA, protein, and cells
- Provide technical assistance to fellow lab members including mouse work
- Performing under general supervision, setting up and maintaining lab equipment, employing standard procedures and practices, learning new protocols and procedures as needed
- Assisting in developing, testing, revising methods, practices and procedures including write-up of workflows, SOPs and other documentation
- Provide training to new students and staff on basic lab techniques as well as animal work
Here's What You'll Need:
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent working experience.
Practical knowledge of current techniques including RNA/DNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, and quantitative real time PCR
- Experience with mouse work such as injection, dissection, blood collection
- Experience with flow cytometry and hands-on experience with tissue culture, as well as protein assays (e.g., immunoassays, ELISA, western blot, immunohistochemistry) would be an asset
- Experience in handling multiple biological samples at any given time and following standard operational protocols (SOPs) as well as being able to write SOPs.
- Strong attention to details
- Strong data management skills, including experience in database management, and advanced skills in Microsoft Office programs
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to prioritize work in response to multiple demands
- Maintaining confidentiality and detailed and precise record keeping are essential skills
- A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives
Employment Type: Full-time temporary 1 year contract with modified benefits (i.e., health and dental).
