Senior Manager, Taxation (12 month contract)
The opportunity
Reporting to Director, Regional Taxation and Global Enterprise Taxation (“Regional Director”), the Senior Manager, Taxation (“SMT”) will be responsible for leading a team of tax professionals in managing all tax responsibilities relating to all investment structures created by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board. This role will also be responsible for handling the global tax footprint for all foreign offices and investment platforms. The SMT will play a key internal consultant role, working closely with business partners and the senior tax team members to provide strong tax support and execution to ensure that enterprise tax risk and compliance obligations are managed appropriately

You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders including partners from the Investments and Corporate Affairs divisions.
What you'll do
Enterprise Management
- Overseeing all tax compliance and coordinating the preparation and filing of subsidiary tax returns prepared in-house and utilizing external tax service providers;
- Staying abreast of developments in investment-related tax laws and regimes in relevant jurisdictions around the world;
- Identifying and providing assistance with reorganizations of investment structures as a result of changes in tax law;
- Understanding the fund’s evolving global business model and provide tax risk oversight and input to the Investment Division to support tax risk management;
Risk Management
- Assist in implementation and responsible for maintenance of the tax risk framework;
- Responsible for the monitoring of internal controls over tax risk;
- Responsible for maintaining reporting tools and templates;
- Responsible for monitoring tax risk management practices of subsidiaries;
- Maintain compliance with the policy and procedures outlined in the Tax Department Policy and Procedures Manual;
- As required, support Regional Director and Head of Tax in advocacy efforts with tax authorities and governments to generate positive legislative changes that provide a more favourable tax regime for Teachers’ both domestically and internationally.
Partnership with the Organization
- Supporting the Tax Department’s role within the Teachers’ organization;
- Representing the Tax Department at Investment Division meetings where necessary;
- Exhibit the confidence and professionalism to work effectively with colleagues across the organization;
- Reach out to, and interact with the Investment Division and other divisions to gather and share information relevant to tax matters;
- Applies a solid understanding of tax matters specific to Teachers’ business that causes various business groups to seek the individual’s input;
- Promotes collaboration and issue resolution within and across teams;
- Strategically leverages external tax advisors to achieve corporate goals;
- Responsible for special enterprise projects and/or initiatives;
- Assist Regional Director and Head of Tax with strategic planning in respect of Tax Department; and
- Maintaining independence from the Investment Division and investment decisions.
- Responsible for oversight and coaching of a team of tax professionals; and
- Be a trusted member of the tax team to advise on compliance issues and manage operational elements integral to investment structures
- People leadership of team of Managers and Tax Coordinator; and
- Accountable for managing compliance costs budget.
- Most critical decision making will be in the realm of allocating duties and responsibilities of direct reports to carry out compliance function; and
- Ability to make recommendations on team hires and performance ratings, however, ultimate decisions will lie with Regional Director and Head of Tax
What you'll need
- CPA, CA
- A minimum of 8 years income tax experience with a focus on tax compliance;
- Some exposure to foreign jurisdictions is an asset;
- Experienced people leader who can effectively coach and develop talent; and
- Experience managing a tax compliance function with international scope is an asset.
- Demonstrated writing skills, strong analytical skills, creativity in written presentation materials and strong oral presentation skills;
- Ability to adapt communications style based on the audience, and a proven skill to synthesize complex technical concepts into plain language for non-specialist audiences;
- Affinity for using technology to find efficient ways to collate and disseminate knowledge (e.g. advanced Excel skills, etc.);
- Strong organizational/project management skills, the ability to efficiently progress multiple assignments;
- Excellent attention to detail and consistently high levels of accuracy;
- Demonstrates personal initiative, strives to innovate and build best practices but is highly attune to the need for pragmatic solutions;
- Energized by ideas, experiences and will encourage a learning environment
- Ability to influence people with personal style and finesse rather than authority;
- A continuous learner who stays on top of business trends and tax technical changes;
- Flexible, able to work with light supervision and adapt to change;
