Your Opportunity The Division of Anatomy in the Department of Surgery, does world-class research and innovativeteaching. The Division has research strengths in regenerative medicine, neuroscience and clinical anatomy incorporating the latest technologies and methodologies to address the fundamental biology of cells and systems. Our foundational anatomical and science teaching is focused on excellence and innovation. Over 3000 students participate in our programs each year from undergraduate, graduate and health care professional programs. We have exceptional state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that offer handson learning opportunities using human cadaveric specimens generously donated to our Willed Body Program, which is one of the largest body donation programs in Canada. Overall, the robust research and teaching in the Division offers an outstanding opportunity to train students in the critical understanding of body structure and function.

The role of Anatomy Technician supports both the operation and maintenance of the Anatomical Specimen Facility in the Division of Anatomy, Department of Surgery. Serving as a an anatomy resource, you will assist with the preparation and maintenance of teaching labs and examinations, participate in training, and provide detailed explanations to medical students in the laboratory setting and through virtual platforms. In addition, you will support and provide instruction at the anatomy satellite facility at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) campus.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Setting up and maintaining human anatomy teaching laboratories in collaboration with staff and course instructors, including supporting examinations according to course schedules
  • Providing instruction on laboratory protocols and procedures to students, teaching assistants, and staff
  • Demonstrating human anatomy to students, teaching assistants, and/or employees using human anatomical specimens
  • Ensuring safe handling of human material, specialized equipment, and laboratory materials
  • Maintaining inventory of anatomical collections, chemicals, and/or apparatus within the Division
  • Applying established standards when cleaning laboratories, rooms, and equipment
  • Preparing human anatomical materials for teaching, including specimen preparation related to embalming procedures

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Science or an acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of related experience providing instruction in human anatomy, including demonstrations or hands-on instruction using anatomical specimens
  • Experience supporting professional programs in anatomical studies, including instructional or teaching laboratory environments
  • Experience with prosection preparation, dissection, and plastination of anatomical specimens
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy, neuroanatomy, and embalming procedures
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, particularly during anatomical dissection, laboratory procedures, and specimen-handling
  • Accurate record-keeping and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting up to 100 lbs occasionally and 20 lbs frequently
