Description

The Surgical Services PreOp Clinic Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is part of a team responsible for the clinical functioning and support of the pre-operative process through engagement with patients by optimizing the patient’s health through pre-assessment activities and liaising with various clinical professionals. The RPN is responsible for preparing the patient’s chart with all the required information and teaching the patient (by phone or in-person) to prepare them for their upcoming surgery.

LWDH Surgical Services delivers several specialty surgical programs: Orthopedics (Total knees. Total hips, spine, lower extremity, upper extremity), Cataracts, Pediatric dental, Gynecology, Urology, General surgery/endoscopy.

The RPN will support OR related visiting specialist clinics and assist in minor procedures. In this role, the RPN will accomplish patient care goals by utilizing nursing best practices in a preoperative setting.

Qualifications

  • Current Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • Current certificate in BCLS (within 12 months)

  • Provide evidence of professional development

  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication

  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with the public both in person and by telephone

  • Demonstrated ability to muti-task and maintain focus under pressure

  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own actions

  • Demonstrates a multidisciplinary approach to patient care

  • Demonstrated computer experience within two years and knowledge of Window-based software

  • Neat, legible handwriting

  • Reliable attendance record

  • Familiar with provincial Wait Time targets or willing to learn

  • Experience booking surgical appointments

  • Familiar with Novari and Meditech or willingness to learn

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital was founded in 1897, and was originally known as the Rat Portage Jubilee Hospital and then the Kenora General Hospital. Through the years a series of additions and renovations took place to meet the expanding needs of the population. On May 1, 1968, the St. Joseph's Hospital and the Kenora General Hospital amalgamated to form the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Treating well over 30,000 people per year, Lake of the Woods District Hospital is Northwestern Ontario's largest hospital outside of Thunder Bay.

The Hospital's core programs include emergency and ambulatory care, chronic care, mental health, maternal and child health, and acute care services which include general medicine, intensive care and surgical services. It also manages a broad range of services including dialysis, chemotherapy, diagnostic imaging, mammography, ultrasound, addiction counseling and detoxification, a sexual assault centre, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services, ambulance (land and dedicated air), palliative care and various education programs.
