Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)
We are looking for a System Design Specialist – Intermediate, to join our team in Toronto.
The incumbent will need to perform system design, signaling design, analysis, modelling, and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems. Will also have to develop and define system design features to meet Customer requirements. Additionally, the incumbent will have to analyze and evaluate customer requirements and verify compliance with our product system technical requirements, develop and define System and Subsystems requirements to fulfill specific customer requirements on the project. Will also have to communicate and gain acceptance of the design with the customer and internal stakeholders. The incumbent is accountable for performing the design work correctly with limited supervision and within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages. The work is typically defined by the Work Package Manager and assigned to the system engineers. The System Design Specialist, Intermediate typically works with a team of engineers to define the project's requirements/design under the technical supervision of the System Design Lead.
Key Accountabilities:
- Must be able to work with complex set of data and restitute synthesis to all the team
- Must be able to work with different background people (engineers, legal, planning, finance)
- Must have strong communication skills and curiosity for asking people
- Responsible for creating set of valuable KPIs to Project Director after having understood company processes
- Responsible to bring benchmarking on best practices (internally and out of the company)
- Support Associate Project Manager on documentation management
- Support PMO manager on setting up proper governance and reports
TECHNICAL
- Prepares and supports customer requirements compliance assessment and gap analysis.
- Converts Customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.
- Similarly creates new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfil customer requirements.
- Prepares system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing and decomposing modelling, refining customer requirements and typical train control domain requirements.
- Presents technical design to other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise, and non-ambiguous terms.
- Interfaces and builds strong working relationships with Software, Hardware and IVVQ groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.
SAFETY:
- Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount.
- Ensures that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects.
MANAGEMENT:
- Implement process improvement in the project.
Key Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a closely related field
- 2-5 years’ experience in development of software-based System applications
- Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools
- Knowledge of systems development life cycle
- Medium level expertise in URS (Urban Rail Signaling) Systems: - Minimum 3 years on/or similar system complexity-intermediate level of expertise on specialized engineering skills of the CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) domain
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in using DOORS, Polarion, Melody advance, or other system design and requirement management tools.
- Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices.
- Rail Signaling knowledge
- System engineering expertise
- Strong planning, presentation, and organizational skills
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills
